Story
From tuberculosis to bird flu and HIV to coronavirus, these infectious diseases share a common origin story: Human interaction with animals. Otherwise known as zoonotic diseases for their passage from animals to humans, these pathogens - both pre-existing ones and those newly identified - emerge and re-emerge throughout history, sparking epidemics and pandemics that have resulted in millions of deaths around the world. How did these diseases come about? And what - if anything - can we do to stop them and their fatal march into our countries, our homes, and our bodies?

Story
The benefits of restrictive diets like paleo and keto have been touted for more than a decade, but as renowned gastroenterologist Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, or "Dr. B", illuminates in this groundbreaking audiobook, the explosion of studies on the microbiome makes it abundantly clear that elimination diets are in fact hazardous to our health. What studies clearly now show - and what Dr. B preaches with his patients - is that gut health is the key to boosting our metabolism, balancing our hormones, and taming the inflammation that causes a host of diseases.

Worse, it contains mild opiates that make it addictive, triggering the same brain receptors as heroin and morphine. High in calories and cholesterol, animal fats and proteins too often leave you hungry and lead to overeating and weight gain. They are often the root causes of a host of avoidable health problems - from indigestion, ulcers, and constipation to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. On the other hand, complex carbohydrates like whole grains, legumes, tubers, and other starches provide your body with essential proteins and nutrients that satisfy the appetite while simultaneously fighting illness.

Don’t ignore the narration reviews! It’s so bad!!
I love Dr. Greger’s message and wanted to listen to ALL of the research. However, I absolutely cannot do any more of this book (I’m about 6 hours in at 1.25 speed) due to the sing-song nature of the narration. It’s beyond distracting; it’s unlistenable, teeth-grating and annoying. The facts I want to retain leave my brain instantly due to the aggravation factor. I ignored the MULTIPLE reviews regarding how bad the narration was thinking I’ll be able to deal with it. No, just, no. It’s worse than you think. I believe somehow this must be some kind of blind research to see who will listen for how long before calling it quits. Well, I quit! And I’ll be returning this book, something I rarely do. I beg Dr. Greger and the publishers to re-record this extremely VALUABLE INFORMATION so that all of us can listen and spread the word on how to stop eating CRAP!

I’m floored by what I didn’t know
I learned so manny new things and I keep going back for more. I re-listen to the part on ways to boost weight loss when I need motivation to keep at it and as a result I lost 9 lbs in 10 days! This is the best program i have ever tried. I’m gonna stay with it till I lose another 38 lbs and then just do the daily dozen after that and enjoy feeling good and being lean again just like when I was a teen! I love dr. Gregors style and his humor makes it more interesting. I have no complaints or any criticism. I am full at the end of each of my 3 meals each day no exceptions and I have lots of energy and clarity. I came to this from an intermittent fasting program and this is much better.

Narrator is a Jeff Goldblum/William Shatner mashup
I heard great things about this book and was excited to be inspired to eat healthier. It's actually really hard to focus on the content because the narrator sounds like Jeff Goldblum doing a William Shatner impression, with lots of gravelly elongation of syllables and lingering sibilants. Normally I love it when an author narrates their own books, and it's obvious the author is passionate about the topic. But his style doesn't work for me.

Content Fantastic. Author is UNLISTENABLE!
I do not know what Dr. Gregers deal is. The content presented is wonderful, insightful and thoughtfully presented. However, the way Dr Greger speaks is dang near unlistenable. His performance of the book, rather than just reading it, is destroyed because he wants to elongate every other word, slow down and speed up every other word after that. It's terrible. And I am shocked that the publisher didn't say anything. It was worse for this book than his last book. He sounds like a snake oil salesman even though he's not. Im not digging the shtick and I wish I could get my money back and just buy the book to avoid this nonsense.

Good but how not to die much better
I felt this book was OK, the suggestions were for the most part small trivial things that were not realistic to implement and some unfounded, very technical. I have read how not to die 7 times it was excellent and I have been plant based for 4 years now.

Great Content, Horrible Narration
So distracting was the irregular cadence of the author's speech, I had to keep repeating the recording, which prolonged the torture of listening. Stick to your knitting, Doctor. Finally found that if I sped up to 1.25, that helped to regulate the speech to a tolerable level. What a shame, the material is soooo good. For this reason only, I recommend getting the text or kindle version.

Absolutely horrible narration
I listened to his How Not to Die book and the narration was very different. In this book he has a bizarre and beyond annoying manner. He enunciates in the strangest way with what sounds like an attempt to be comical ...which doesn’t work. I’m sure the material is valuable but listening to him made me want to scream. I’m returning the book. Bummer.

Narration not so bad
I was almost put off by the reviews about the narration. If you listen to the sample and are ok with it then you will be fine listening to the rest of the book. I think he’s so funny and his personality is just coming out in the way he reads his material.
