Great tips for beginner gardeners

I really enjoyed both of these books! I love to garden and I thought I knew a lot about it but author Sophia Hall has taught me so much more. I am now thinking seriously about vermicomposting! Her explanations are easy to follow and very encouraging. I had never heard of Hugelkultur Gardening before and I found it very interesting. A low-maintenance way to provide the correct environment and nutrients to sustain your garden for years! This gardening resource is one that I am sure I will keep referring back to. The narrator's voice is warm and her delivery sometimes had me chuckling out loud!

Gardening made simple

As someone who grew up on a farm, I was particularly attracted to this double book. I particularly love the advice about how to deal with weeds as that was my bane in my farming years. I learnt some key lessons in how to control weeds and learnt in a few hours something that eluded me for years. It was awesome to learn the surprisingly simple, low-cost strategies to eradicate pests – there are so many valuable lessons in this audiobook.

Hugelkultur is a novel concept to me and exposure to this concept is an added bonus. The ability to self-water is an attractive model for those who care about the environment. I am intrigued by this concept and will be looking into cultivating vegetables in a Hugelbed at some point.

The best gardening book ever!

I don’t know where to begin, there were so many excellent things about this book. The book is really enjoyable. The author has a fun, down-to-earth, at times self-deprecating, sense of humor. I’ve read dozens of gardening books over the years. I love gardening, but that doesn’t mean I’m good at it. After listening to this book, I finally understand why. Unlike most books, this one walks you through every step of each process needed to be a successful backyard, homestead, or raised bed gardener. For example, instead of just saying “set up a soaker hose system,” Hall explains every single step you need to do it successfully. It might seem like that would be boring or overkill, but it wasn’t! The tone of the book is too engaging and enjoyable.
She also includes low or no-cost alternatives to a wide variety of things you need to set up a successful garden. Nothing slips through the cracks. Want to know when a fruit or vegetable is at the peak of ripeness and ready to pick? Look no further. Hall lists off almost every imaginable food you’d grow with specific guidelines on how to know when to pick it. I can’t praise this book enough. If you were like me and thought you just didn’t have a green thumb, buy this book and let Sophia Hall guide you to gardening success.

Resourceful in being self sufficient

A good thought-out book from A-Z on being self-sufficient. Grow your own food and live off the land. Be more self-reliant. This two in one book is a great blueprint for all your gardening answers. I love how it guides you in starting your gardening from seeds to making sure your soil is right for the plants and how to make compost for better soil for your produce. The 2nd book on hügelkultur is very interesting concept used by the Germans. I will have to give it a try. Both books are great to start gardening with simple methods. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in homesteading.

So informative and enjoyable

I really enjoyed listening to these books. Both the author and narrator did a fantastic job. As fascinated as I am with Huglekultur it is not feasible for me in my treeless and leafless newly developed area but I now have the details in the back of my mind for the future. But I really enjoyed and appreciated the details of the book. The homestead gardening book was also enjoyable, informative and broken down into easy details. As examples this is the first time I have heard anyone teach about the numbers on the bottom of plastic containers to know if you should be using it in your garden. The author takes the time to list the tools and items needed to build things for the garden like raised beds. I also enjoyed her examples of reusing or repurposing things in the garden. I typically spend hours on Pinterest researching each subject just to get overwhelmed or to not be able to locate the pin down the road when I have questions. The PDF is brilliant to be able to have it at my fingertips as well on top of the enjoyable listen. I could go on and on but suffice it to say I RECOMMEND!!

Very Helpful and Informative

I had absolutely no idea what Hugelkultur was. The term hugle bed had me scratching my head until you explained. Now, I think I'm going to attempt it. This is huge because I believe I could kill a silk plant! No green thumb at all. If I'm able to pull it off there will be cucumbers and tomatoes for everyone. Wish me luck
