Story
Many horse trainers, even those who espouse the so-called natural horsemanship approach, take the position that horses who fail to obey a human's request are doing so as much out of perversity as ignorance. That's not Mark Rashid's view. In his words, "If we understand that horses can't separate the way they feel from the way they act, then we can start to see that unwanted behavior isn't bad behavior at all. More times than not, it's just the horse expressing the way he feels at that particular moment in time....

Great
This is primarily a book about techniques and problems regarding horse training. I am known as a horse nut. I have had horses all my life until recently and I grew up on a cattle/horse ranch. So needless to say I am very interested in the topic of the book.
Rashid discusses the most serious problems horses face that of the human attitude and temper. The author uses logical explanations and personal stories to explore and explain the root behavioral and training problems. The author tries to look at a situation from the viewpoint of the horse and proceed from there. Rashid attempts to explain why horses react in certain way and what you can do to counter it. The author adds a note of humor to his writing so it makes the book entertaining while the reader learns something. The book is well written. If you are a horse lover you will enjoy the book. Kevin Young does a good job narrating the book.

Horse stories jam-packed with training tips and
an understanding of horse behavior and needs.
Mark Rashid is a good writer and deftly shares numerous training methods and problem solving solutions within memorable stories. The stories make for a good teaching method, making the ideas easier to remember and apply.
The pdf file of illustrations that are in the written book is a generous addition to the audio book and I downloaded, opened, and enjoyed all the illustrations first before listening to the book. As he told the stories, the drawing that went with it was easily remembered.
The original chapters of the first edition of the book, written some years ago, were read, then followed with commentary by Mark Rashid as he reconsidered his original training ideas. Most of the time he simply added more that he had learned in the meantime, and a few times he had changed his mind about a method and explained why and what he now chose as a better method. We all change over time and I like the way he chose to edit this book.
I don't like sad stories, but although there are some moving memories shared, they are meaningful and precious and not heart-breaking. There are a few hilarious moments shared too.
More people seem to be getting aware of better ways to treat and be with animals and it is trainers who are in the best position to further this evolution. Well, the "good" trainers, at least.
Mark Rashid's books are a contribution to humanity's evolution and awareness.
Graceful narration. Well done all around.

An Amazing Amazing Amazing Book
Where does Considering the Horse rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I've read/listened to every Mark Rashid book on here and all I can say is, Mark.... write faster.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Considering the Horse?
Doc.... I went through that with Star, my old horse, but I had him put down, not shot. I did the same as Walter, feeding him, getting a Equine Dentist for him, anything I could think of. My Vet said I gave Star 5 years more than he ever thought I could and he was in great shape due to that, until his decline which took about a month. I had a hard time letting him go. But, I'll see him again when I get home and, we'll go for a ride.
What about Kevin Young’s performance did you like?
Kevin's read was as if he were Mark telling it, isn't that the best anyone can do. Kevin was invisible, which is how he should be. That is perfect to me.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I think I answered that already.
Any additional comments?
Mark Rashid.... write faster. I was so excited to see this released, finally I had something to listen to when I'm mowing, fixing fences or driving to town. Now.... I have to find something to listen to. I will listen to anything you want to write, about horses.

Another great book
Just another great book with so much learning and personable accessible information. My favourite part for me (though sad) was in the last chapter of how animals try to communicate with us. It would make relationships with our animals so much better as well as more productive if we would try to understand what they are trying to tell us a little more. I love Mark Rachid's writing style.

Excellent
Whilst this book was written a while ago it is still as pertinent today as it will ever be. With its revisions and reflections it highlights where Mark was at in his training at the time to where he is now. The information and insight we MUST have as riders and owners of these beautiful animals is paramount.
Wherever you are in your horsemanship journey, this is a great addition to my ever growing knowledge. Thank you.

Interesting perception on horsemanship
This is a fantastic book! It was very informative and evoked a whole range of emotions. Even my young daughter and her friend (10yrs) enjoyed listening to it in the car.

Considering the horse
Love Mark Rashid, have listened to a number of his audio books whilst mucking out and it has really made me consider the horses point of view more. I am looking at what the horse may be asking of me and consider this before just pushing on with my own thing. how blessed we are to have the trust of such beautiful creatures.

Great storyteller
The things I loved most about this book were the great stories and the updated notes at the end of each chapter. The updates showed that Mark Rashid has continued to learn and grow as a horse person throughout his life, and in so doing he has become kinder and fairer to the horses. He really shows his learning process from a beginner as a child through to an experienced trainer, being taught lessons by the old man and a range of troubled horses. I especially liked how he updated things to emphasise the importance of checking for pain and health problems, tack fit, and listening to what the horse is trying to tell you. Though many of us start out learning some less than ideal techniques for training and riding, I hope that these days more and more people are embracing the idea of listening to their horses. I’m curious to read his more recent work to see what his training is like these days. Some of the stories may be upsetting for people sensitive to animal suffering, and the last chapter involves death and euthanasia. This is an engaging listen with some interesting reflections, even for those of us who don’t use training methods such as those described (or not anymore, anyway.)

Thank you!
I’ve learnt so much from this book. I’ve laughed and I’ve cried. It’s touch my soul and my heart. Mark thank you for sharing your journey and for the many pieces of wisdom. The piece that has truly touch me is that we need to listen to what the horse is trying to tell us instead of trying to teach them. They are amazing beautiful creatures and we are truly bless by their presence in our lives. I’m so grateful.

Another Mark Rashid Gem
I loved this book - although some descriptions of horses in trouble with bad owners were hard to listen to. Anyone having trouble with their horse with training or behavioural issues will find this book really thought- provoking. I was quite surprised at some of the ways he worked on specific problems and his whole approach to problemsolving shows so much respect for the horse - all very easy when things are going well but gee I was impressed with the respect he continued to show with horses who seemed mad, bad, stupid or all 3! Some wonderful lessons here ❤️

Excellent horsemanship guidance
It was a great listen thanks to fun and colourful stories. This book tells about precious lessons that can only be learned through a lifetime of working and living with horses as a careful student. Methods which Mark has based on that experience and which are shared here create a trusting and fun relationship between man and horse. Thank you Mark and Walter.
