Publisher's Summary

What would you do to save yourself?

In the village where “all are welcome and those in need may stay” long-buried secrets keep rising to the surface. With renovations on the house finally complete, Jayne and Tripp are ready to open their B&B. Villagers and tourists gather for their grand opening barbecue. Close friends check in as their first guests. Aside from a minor glitch or two, everything is going to plan...and then someone turns up dead on the side of the road.

Unsure if she’s looking for a murderer or a hit-and-run driver, Jayne jumps headlong into figuring out what happened. Her confidence is shaken, though, when some of the locals point out that the rash of murders started when she arrived in the village, insinuating that she brought the darkness hovering over Whispering Pines. Now, in the middle of a possible murder investigation, Jayne must clear her own name as well.

Fantastic

This is the first I have read by this author but it won't be the last. The book was well written and kept me wanting to hear more. The twists and turns were well done and the characters all came to life. The Narrator did a great job of breathing life into the world and keeping you engaged the whole way through. I will definitely have to pick up the rest in the series. I was given a free copy of this audio in return for an unbiased review.

Love this series

Hidden secrets

I loved book 4. The B & B is now open and had a very successful launch party. What is a party without a lecher huh? A troubled man that just doesn't realize how close he is to meeting his maker. Fired from his job and acting out in resentment towards women since that is why he lost his job with misconduct allegations. This story is beginning to take the village into a different direction. What is going on that has put a black cloud over it that it seems only Jayne can correct? Long ago secrets that have finally come out have had a devastating affect on 1 young villager that now knows she has a sister that she didn't know about. To catch a killer is hard enough but to have to interrogate your friends doubles that responsibility since the murdered man was a guest at Pine Time, Whispering Pines newest bed and breakfast owned by Jayne and Tripp. Guests also included a very mysterious man that Jayne is not to keen on seeing her best friend. The deputy is getting more responsibilities assigned to him since he is going into training to further his career. What will Jayne do once the season is over and the tourists are gone? She's got options about keeping the B & B in the black but will it be enough to keep her parents from selling it if it looses profits? I can't wait to see what other psychological thrills are thrown into the mix and how Jayne overcomes all to stay in her beloved village.

Cozy murder mystery.

As always, I have to state that this book was given to me for free in exchange for a review.
I always like to state that this does not impact my review or my opinion of the book. My reviews are honest and my own opinion of the story, performance, and overall thoughts on the book.

There was a bit of a classic Agatha Christie feel to the murder plot which I really enjoyed. I love murder mysteries with a universally hated victim: there is a real guilty pleasure in the whole ‘karma’ aspect of a bad ‘un getting hurt rather than some sweet, unsuspecting innocent. Similarly, I really like it when the suspect pool is limited to a small number of close friends/family members so that the investigator really has to dig in with the interviews in order to root out the real feelings and motives.

In this case, I confess that I was a little bit puzzled as to how Jayne decided which suspects could be eliminated and why especially in the early stages of her questioning. It felt as if her usual insistence on protocol and remaining unbiased came under strain and she was perhaps making professional calls based on personal motivations. However this was recognized and addressed by the characters in the storyline, so didn’t cause any credibility issues.

Hidden Secrets is my favorite Whispering Pines book so far: gripping plotline; great character development for Jayne, Tripp, Reed, and Morgan; and an intriguing new addition with the introduction of the mysterious River Carr. Fans of cozy mysteries with a paranormal ‘woo woo’ flavor will love this series!

Hidden Secrets

Hidden Secrets by Shawn McGuire is a hidden faceted gem. I loved how the author has created this village full of quirky characters and vivid imagery. There is Wiccan history and background, mystery, and suspense. With Jayne and Tripp, their relationship is solid, yet the author lets the listener use their imagination. Sandra Murphy is the perfect voice for this series. She brings the characters to life, and inflects the right emotions. I requested this review copy audiobook and have voluntarily written this review. I will most definitely listen to more books by this author and narrator. I love how the storyline is original and unpredictable.

Totally Did Not See That Coming

This is part of a series, however, is also great as a stand alone. I have not yet listened to the other books of this series, but could easily follow along with the characters and the story line.

Jayne O'Shea inherits a large home in Whispering Pines, which I picture as a small town, where everyone knows your business and no one ever forgets your wrong doings. Jayne and her boyfriend, Tripp, decide to turn the home into a bed and breakfast and invite some of their closest friend to come stay for a long weekend and enjoy the luxury of the bed and breakfast and everything this small town has to offer. The bother-in-law of her best friend, ends up dead, with his body on the side of the road. As Jayne is the sheriff of this small town, her job is to try to put all the pieces together, as this body doesn't look like it was a hit and run, but something more sinister. From there, the real story begins.......

The narration on this book was fantastic! And I am sure that I will listen to move of her work.

Excellent series!

This is the second book I have read by this author and it was excellent. Jayne and Tripp open their B&B while Jayne continues to work as sheriff. Their opening weekend they are almost completely booked and mostly by Jayne’s friends from school and one mysterious perhaps magical dark and handsome visitor. Of course there has to be a murder and it has to be a guest and the rest are suspects. Jayne struggles to deal with past friends, secrets, a business, love, weather changes, jealousy, and of course her pup. I really enjoy the series and look forward to more! The narration was excellent! I received a free review copy of this book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I liked it but I didn't love it

This is the second book in the series for me but I think it will be my last. I love the small town atmosphere and I don't have any real issues with the two main characters. I did not enjoy the mystery. The who and the why was not compelling. It was just 'meh." I did enjoy the narration though.

Quirky Village

This is the 2nd book of the series that I have listened to and it was nice to get more understanding of the characters. Sheriff O'Shea and Tripp are finally opening their B&B with a grand opening weekend. One of the guests of the weekend, who is boorish and objectionable, is found dead by the side of the road. Was he a victim of a hit and run, or was it murder? O'Shea has her hands full with the investigation leaving Tripp to make sure the guests are taken care of. More than one storyline is going on in this quirky village with its interesting group of characters.I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

It doesn't look like a hit and run.

At last, the old house has been spruced and restored and turned into a B and B, just in time for the tail end of the tourist season and a grand opening is arranged. The first guests are old friends of Jayne, also the local sheriff, for whom the success of the new business will determine whether or not Whispering pines itself will survive as the land on which it was built belonged to her re gently deceased grandmother as somewhere to welcome those uncomfortable in the outside world. But since Jayne's arrival some months beflre, secrets have been tumbling out of the woodwork...

Would grandmother have approved of her opening the house to strangers? And is the body by the road a simple accident or has murder struck again? The characters in this small town grow comfortably more familiar as Jayne herself settles in to this beautiful, if somewhat mysterious area of countryside. A stand alone read but much better if the series is dead in sequence. Narration by Sandra Murphy is simply excellent with a full range of vocal depths and heights. She does full justice to the story increasing the reader's involvement and enjoyment.

I very much enjoy this tale of small town wicken folk and am grateful to the rights holder of Hidden Secrets: Whispering Pines who, at my request, freely gifted me with a complimentary copy, via Audiobook Boom. Thank you.
A delightfully enjoyable book.
