Every werewolf knows the meek won't inherit the Earth.

Fen Young is a half-shifter whose inner beast is more mouse than wolf. Home is her castle, the only place she's ever felt safe.

Enter Hunter Green, an uber-alpha strong enough to stop traffic with a single look. He's handsome and enticing and seems like just the ticket to broaden Fen's horizons...until the uber-alpha brushes off his admirer and summarily rejects her from her home pack.

Now treading water in the no-man's land of outpack territory, Fen must confront a missing pack mate, a tantalizing stranger, and a serial killer targeting half-werewolves. Will she be able to shore up her waning power in time to save her friend...and half-breeds everywhere...before it's too late?

Hunter is hiding something and Lia is leary

Fen and Hunter first met when she was in Alpha Wolfie's pack and she was out on pack land and saw hunter and thought that he was trying to find a pack but what she didn't know was that he was there for her and he was trying to get her to go where she could become the person he knew she could be she was happy where she was he let her drag him back to her pack and when he talked to the alpha she found herself kicked right out of the pack and told she couldn't return so several other members went with her with Wolfie's good wishes along with some of his power as she was their alpha now for some reason she didn't trust her wolf and she couldn't do a lot of the things the blooded wolves could and she had to depend on her second Glen and Ginger and they were just going from place to place but they needed money and Ginger was a very sexual person who didn't have one ounce of modesty so she was up on a table stripping in a room full of blooded wolves who were about to howl their approval. Just when things got a little hairy in walks the one man that she hadn't expected to see so soon but Hunter Greene he came to rescue her but she couldn't understand why but after they barely got away and had decided to team up with another wolf who happen to assist also but they didn't know him at allnhe said his name was Quill he claimed that he didn't have any pack and that he wanted to run with them so they voted him and voted Hunter out but Hunter had already told them that Fen was his mate that didn't sit well with several of the pack members Lia was the one who didn't want Hunter to leave but she did want Quill too, she didn't like him and didn't want him near her if she could help it things happen that made you wonder what they were all thinking when things happened. This is more Fen's story because she is a half wolf but Hunter is an enforcer who works for the Tribunal Council and he is hunting for the SSS who is going around killing half wolves and removing their hearts. There is another girl who has just gone missing and they plan to check with her family to see if they could get some information to help find her she and Lia are about the same age and as she and Fen are the two half wolves in their group Hunter will make sure she is safe as well as Lia who adores Hunter even though Fen is convinced that she can take care of her and her pack without his help he is not so sure until Lia is kidnapped Hunter turns back up and Ginger blames Lia's kidnapping on Hunter.Things are definitely not what they seem in this story. Pretty good story. The next book continues Fen's story. I gave 5*'s on the kindle ebook that I purchased 2016. I also purchased this audible 2018. I cannot give the audible the same rating I gave it 3*'s. I thought listening would make you feel like you were there but the reader just read no real emphasis on what was happening.

What Was I Thinking?

My Rating: two and a half stars * I received a free copy of the audio book for this novel from Free Audiobook Promo Codes. All opinions in the following review are my own. What was I thinking when I decided I wanted to read this book? I'll tell you what, I wasn't thinking. Had I bothered to skim its Goodreads page we wouldn't be here now. This book wasn't for me, that's for sure! Fen was whiny and annoying. She let herself be convinced way too easily by her so-called pack. She also "accepted" people into her inner circle way too easily for someone on the run. If I were her I would never have wanted to see Hunter's face again. Also, in what world is she considered an "alpha"? She bearly has control of her pack as it is. Hunter was stoic and uninteresting. I didn't understand his appeal. Though don't worry, we all know he's an uber-alpha because it was repeated 800+ times during the 7+ hours of this audio book. I also don't understand why Hunter did what he did to Fen in the first place. What did he gain from setting her on her own? She was defenseless, to a degree, but she still welcomed him in. Her "pack" was one big blur. None of them were memorable enough for me to remember their names. They were all kids (for the most part) and helped Fen make decisions that would involve the whole pack. The only one that separated herself from the others a little bit, at first, for being extremely annoying and later turned into a whole other situation was the "trouble twin" (it's how she was referred to by Fen multiple times throughout the novel). What happened at the end of this novel would have come so much more easily and sooner had everyone stopped and had an actual conversation with one another. The pack loved to throw accusations but they ended up picking the wrong bad guy. It's a wonder how my eyes are still attached to my head considering how much I rolled them during the 7+ hours of this audio book. The Audio Book: The narration was magical compared to what this story put me through. Though be advised that this narrator doesn't have a nice range of male and females voices. Most of the characters sounded alike (especially when 3+ characters were having a conversation) and it did get confusing.

Slow start but ends with a bang!

Let’s start off by saying I love paranormals. Wolf shifters are my fav! So I was looking forward to this story. It starts off confusing and slow. After a few chapters it all starts coming together and making sense. Then it turn into a fabulous story. There is intrigue, drama, mates, seduction, a few snarky girls as well as a stalker. This is my first book by this author. This is the first book in a series. This can be read as a stand alone. This is my first book by this author. I also listened to this on audio and Angel Clark did a good job with the narration.

Great spin-off series

Not realizing that this was a spinoff book from a different series from the author I am rather pleased to say that I wasn't completely lost with the storyline as I have been in other books. The author does a wonderful job of letting the reader know a little from the previous series, without spoilers that would ruin that series, so we are not completely lost. I can't wait to listen all of the books now

Engaging Read (3.5⭐️)

I liked Fen and was curious about her since she was first introduced to me in the Wolf Rampant series. So I was happy to learn she had her own story. This segment of Fen’s journey is an interesting one. Fen starts off as a character that is unsure of herself and her abilities. As her story progresses the reader gets little glimpses of how strong and intelligent Fen could be. One of the things I liked about Fen was her courage. I liked how even though she may have been filled with fear she stepped up and fought for those she loves and herself. I feel as Fen grows and comes more into her own that she might actually become quite an amazing kick butt character. This part of her journey ends with Fen making some difficult choices and preparing to face emotions she’s been holding deep inside. Maybe she might even find some answers. I look forward to finding out what the future has in store for Fen and seeing how her character develops.

Fen starts to be an alpha

I’ve been a Fen fan since the start and wanted to know more about her. I got a lot more of her in this book. I was shaking my head since the start of the story. I really wanted Fen to be able to reach out and listen to other wolves and not dismiss them. I wanted her to be more aware. However, I guess that is part of the story, where we know better than the heroine in the story. We’re the ones yelling, don’t go in there, etc. Fen got to do a bit of stretching herself and learning about what it is to be alpha. Her packmates got to learn what it is to be a pack. I’m glad this is only the beginning of Fen’s story. Angel Clark did a good job voicing Fen and giving the timid voice to as well as boisterous voices to the other packmates. The flow was pretty good with a lot of internal voicing for Fen. There were the blank spot pausing, but I did not find them overwhelming nor annoying. The story overall was a good listen.

Start to a New Urban Fantasy book

Fen is a very interesting character. She is a half shifter and her wolf is something she forces to stay in the back of her mind. I enjoyed seeing how she worked with her pack and how each one brought something different to the group dynamic. The other half shifter made me want to hug her but I loved getting to see her embrace her wolf and find her own courage and confidence. I hope Fen learns from her and can find her own confidence. I look forward to seeing how Fen and her wolf interact in the next books. This was a fun and unique addition to the shifter books out there. I can't wait to see what happens next. This was a good start to this new series. Some of the twists I saw coming but this wasn't a bad thing because I enjoyed the book. There were also some twists I definitely didn't see coming. I will definitely be continuing this series to see what happens next with Fen and her friends.

Interesting!

This is a great urban fantasy wolf-shifter book with romance. It's fast-paced with good scene transitions. The plot and characters were mostly well developed. However, I didn't fully connect with the main character, Fen. Despite being clever, she lacked a backbone that is anticipated by the heroine. I'm assuming, as the series progresses, Fen's character will grow. Angel Clark's performance was great. Her reading well-paced and ideal for this story. I think this audiobook is an excellent choice for new adults (NA). Perhaps, I would've enjoyed it more if I was in the NA age range. I was given a free copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review.

Really dives into the head of a wolf shifter

Half wolf-shifter Fen has found herself at the head of her own mini pack, on the run, hampered by her timid inner wolf who gives her insufficient authority and a pack-mate called Ginger with a tendency to get them all in trouble. Into the mix come two new prospective pack members - a cowboy and an enforcer. Can either be trusted? We're thrown straight into the action, with a bar fight prompted by Ginger's showing off, but from there the plot seems a little slow to ramp up to the real crisis. Partly that's due to the storytelling style, which focuses heavily on the inner thoughts, urges, and byplay between Fen and her submerged inner wolf. The upside of this is that you really get a feeling that Fen is truly dual natured, not just a human who happens to sprout fur on the full moon. I wouldn't have liked to lose that insight into her inner life, but its impact on the pacing stops me giving this 5 stars.
