Publisher's summary

A survivor on the run

After refusing the laws of her sadistic pack, Skye Markham barely escapes with her life, seeking sanctuary with the feared Blackwater pack. Hunted by her former Alpha and his soldiers, she’s determined to create a life even though she knows they will come for her.

An alpha with a pack to protect

As the next alpha in line, Remy Holt has spent years guarding the Blackwater pack and his family from those who seek to seize control and destroy them. The last thing he needs or wants is Skye Markham and the dangers she brings with her adding to the stress on his pack, but his wolf has a different opinion. He wants her, and after one moment that shouldn't have been possible, he knows he’ll never be able to let her go.

A bond unlike any other

Skye thought she was finally safe, but as her bond with Remy strengthens, the shifter world starts to break apart at the seams. Missing shifters, a dying population, and pack wars are all causing their sanctuary to crumble around them, and Skye is trapped in the middle of it all. Someone is out to destroy the pack and if they succeed, there will bring down everything Remy has sought to protect and for Skye...maybe there is no such thing as a sanctuary.

Sanctum is the first book in the Blackwater Pack series. It is 135,000 words. It is a paranormal fated-mate romance. Possible trigger warnings: abuse, violence, language, and bullying.

Pretty Brutal Very Good

Not gonna lie, this was a brutal story. I wish the MC was older, but the age the author picked is better to highlight the depravity of her old pack. She is 17 and the author writes the story like they are mature teenagers. Most authors either make them too child like or too mature. This story was a perfect balance of romance/highscool/and evil. I even found myself laughing here and there.

Perfect Series

This is my favorite series. My dream is that the audio book for Legacy has Zachary Webber or Jacob Morgan doing the audible version for Remy and keeps Stefanie Kay as well for Skye. Stefanie Kay does great in Sanctum & Prey.
The perfect amount of drama, cruelty, love, action & slight fantasy since it's a werewolf community. Remy is the perfect book boyfriend/mate.
This could show young teens/adults how to overcome traumatic & cruel situations with help from others & by yourself. It also shows how love should be.

Wow! *trigger warnings, but well worth the read

Excellent narration. Powerful story well written. Pulls no punches. Very candid, but does not exploit or glorify themes of rape and abuse.

Extremely refreshing

I must say although the abuse was extremely uncomfortable, this book was interesting until the last page. My only regret is that I can’t continue to read the following books on audible yet. So happy that the heroine isn’t some sniveling wimpy girl! She’s been through the roughest time ever and has found her inner self and wolf and is kicking butt! Can’t wait to continue the series.

Great start to a werewolf shifter YA series!

Sanctum is the first book in the Blackwater Pack series by Hannah McBride. This was the author’s first book and she is relatively new since this was published in 2020. I didn’t realize before going in that this is a YA paranormal series, so while I had been expecting this to be an adult shifter romance I also was easily invested in the story and thought it was a great read!

Skye Markham is a 17-year old shifter and she and her mother have lived as less than within their abusive wolf pack. Skye, her mother, and 2 others have been living in the Omega house which is basically treated as a brothel and the 3 adults there are used to “service” the pack however they see fit. When their Alpha passes, who was Skye’s grandfather, her uncle becomes the new Alpha and decides that going forward Omegas can be declared at 16 instead of 18…which means Skye will be introduced to everything that comes with being an Omega in their pack. Skye and her mom end up escaping New Mexico that night and head for sanctuary with the Blackwater pack in Washington. Shortly after moving there and being accepted into their pack, Skye heads out to Granite Peak Academy in Montana, a high school for shifters. There she meets her new pack and Remy, the next alpha in line for the Blackwater pack.

Skye was quite sheltered in her previous pack, so while bonding with new friends she also learns about Netflix, true mate bonds and how rare they are, gets comfortable with shifting, and learns how female shifters are a rare commodity nowadays in packs. This was predictable, but like, I still enjoyed it for what it was. I’m a sucker for a mate bond so this was fun, even if I do wish it wasn’t YA. 😅 In this we get pack wars, missing shifters, jealousy, a dying population, family drama, secrets, and legacies. The first 3 books in this series is Skye and Remy’s story but where book 1 ends everyone is fine and it’s an okay place to stop (aka no major cliffhanger lol).

CW: bullying, sexual assaults, abuse, rape (side characters)
