"Extraordinary.... An emotional roller coaster." (Delia Ephron)

Publisher's Summary

He was the first person to inspire her, to move her, to truly understand her. Was he meant to be the last?

Lucy is faced with a life-altering choice. But before she can make her decision, she must start her story - their story - at the very beginning.

Lucy and Gabe meet as seniors at Columbia University on a day that changes both of their lives forever. Together they decide they want their lives to mean something, to matter. When they meet again a year later, it seems fated - perhaps they'll find life's meaning in each other. But then Gabe becomes a photojournalist assigned to the Middle East, and Lucy pursues a career in New York. What follows is a 13-year journey of dreams, desires, jealousies, betrayals, and ultimately love. Was it fate that brought them together? Is it choice that has kept them away? Their journey takes Lucy and Gabe continents apart but never out of each other's hearts.

Me Before You meets One Day in this devastatingly romantic debut novel about the enduring power of first love, with a shocking, unforgettable ending. A Love Story for a new generation.

    "Disappointed"

I feel like this book got a lot of hype. I was very disappointed. I found the main character to be sort of annoying, causing me to roll my eyes at several points during my listening. I can appreciate a good love story but this one didn't do it for me.

    "Meh."

I'm not usually a romance reader, and this did not grow my appreciation for the genre. Both main characters were adolescent jerks who naturally land highly successful careers without even trying. They want to "change the world" through these careers, though neither of them show any signs of actually giving a rat's ass about anyone other than themselves or each other. The settled-for husband, who could have been a moral counterpoint, is instead a robotic ivy leaguer who thought he married a stepford wife. This might be a good example of how social media unintentionally keeps us connected to those who we most likely would have lost touch with once a relationship ends. Instead, we are made to feel close through updates, photos, etc. unless we actively make the choice to unfollow or unfriend. I also really hated the comparison of different types of relationships to types of fires. People are not fires. Jumping from fire to fire has consequences because unlike fires, people have feelings. This has to be said to a romance novel??

I nearly cried at the end, but probably because I make myself finish most books and I still had 7 minutes left.

Good, just sad. I didn't like knowing the end result. Not sure what was supposed to make this a good ending.

    "LIGHT LOST"
What made the experience of listening to The Light We Lost the most enjoyable?

This was on sale, and I decided well let see it was a good story of time passing two people meet again and spark fly. It's short lived and for me it was a confession of regret.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Predictable, because of what Gabe does professionally

Would you listen to another book narrated by Jill Santopolo?

no, she didn't put any passion on the story.

If you could rename The Light We Lost, what would you call it?

    Living with regret

    Any additional comments?

This was a story that at first was o.k then it was more of a mundane monologue of what not to feel for a selfish man who only thinks of himself. Only at the end he realizes his shortcoming.
He realizes that the one thing he had that was worth holding on to yet time after time he just let it go. Gabe was a dumbass, because he wasn't man enough to admit that his life needed Lucy.

    "AMAZING"

The author was an amazing narrator. I loved and felt for every character. This was a story that pulled you in and made you think about your own life and also deeply care for the characters. I hated the ending, but also never wanted tge story to end.

"Annoying narrator, but overall good story"

I was slightly annoyed with the narrator's (author's) voice on this. I was frustrated through the beginning because the story was a little slow. I was happy with how it ended though.

    "Very Obvious, Very Unsophisticated"

***Warning- Potential Spoiler**** As someone who lost a child (who was on life support and died from sepsis), the author's depiction was unsophisticated and naive. Also, the book was very predictable and a bit silly in places. The main character is selfish and immature.

    "Totally unbelievable dialogue"

I wanted to like this book, I really did. The story had so much potential, but the dialogue, the characters and the narrator just combined to make a terrible audiobook. Lucy has a complete lack of self awareness, Gabe is pretentious and selfish, and poor Darrin just gets shat on the entire book. By the end, I really thought she deserved to be alone and miserable. There were times where I literally had to turn this audiobook off because Lucy's character made me so angry. Who gets mad when their significant other plans a surprise trip to Paris, because they wanted to be able to pick the hotel??? Are you kidding? She loved grand gestures from that a-hole Gabe, but sweet Darrin's surprises always piss her off? And the dialogue was just horrendous. In the middle of sex she says "you make me feel infinite." Who tf says that? No one. Nobody talks like that. Stupid characters, bad dialogue. Don't waste your time.
