Publisher's summary

Sinclair Rutherford is a young Seattle cop with a taste for the finer things. Doing menial tasks and getting hassled by superiors he doesn't respect are definitely not "finer things". Good police work and bad luck lead him to crack a case that changes quickly from a career-making break into a high-profile humiliation when footage of his pursuit of the suspect - wildly inappropriate murder weapon in hand - becomes an Internet sensation.

But the very publicity that has made Rutherford a laughing stock in the department lands him what could be the job opportunity of a lifetime: the chance to work with a team of eccentric experts, at the direction of a demanding but distracted billionaire. Together, they must solve the murder of a psychologist who specialized in the treatment of patients who give people "the creeps".

There is no shortage of suspects.

A fun little mystery comedy.

This is a very fun book. The writing style of Scott Meyer is just as enjoyable when applied to mystery in a modern police department as it is when applied to computer wizards living in the Middle Ages. The narration is delightful and the pace of the story will keep you listening late into the night.

Seriously Good

Buy it, listen to it, enjoy it. This book is funny, interesting, and different just like any work from Scott Meyer. The performance was solid as always from Luke Daniels.

It's no Off to be the Wizard, but decent

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Probably not. I got this book because I loved the Off to be the Wizard series by the same author.
Luke Daniels also narrates those books so you can hear some similarities with the characters voices, which is nice.
And even though the actual book isn't that bad, there are just so many great books out the at the moment.

If you’ve listened to books by Scott Meyer before, how does this one compare?

Read response above.
Off to be the Wizard series = fantastic.
Master of Formalities = 1 of the few books i used the 'great listen guarantee' on, and returned.
This one is decent to be fair, however it's not as good as the Off to be the Wizard series.
I guess my expectations were high having listened to them first.
Still it is quite entertaining.

Have you listened to any of Luke Daniels’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes. I'm not sure, his narration and performances are fantastic. I would listen to more books with him as the narrator again, however i buy books more based on the content rather than specifically for the narration.
Good narration is just a bonus

If you could take any character from The Authorities out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Probably the ex special forces body guard kind of guy. I imagine he'd have some very interesting stories.

Any additional comments?

I liked the book, and to be honest if there was a follow-up book i would probably get it because it seems like an interesting concept. Just that after following the Magic 2.0 series (Off to be the Wizard) ....well i was hoping for more.
Not meant to be a negative review, its just i was hoping for a little more from the author.
To be fair, maybe I should listen to it again to give it a fairer appraisal.

Surprisingly, entertaining

I was so sad when this book ended. ALL of the characters were engaging. This was an excellent treat.

Constantly enjoyable.

What made the experience of listening to The Authorities the most enjoyable?

The author blends real world dialogue with humor and suspense. Many laugh-out-loud moments, while never being predictable or cliche. The performance was fabulous and greatly enhances the dialogue to a degree that I would not be able to replicate if read hard copy.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Authorities?

The quirky bits of humor during the interactions between characters is fantastic.

Which character – as performed by Luke Daniels – was your favorite?

The performer gives each character unique characteristics. The flow between characters was flawless and magnified the humor, suspense, and intrigue.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Many laugh-out-loud moments.

Any additional comments?

I have come to enjoy this author very much.

Raises the bar for humorous action/comedy writing.

Ive never heard of a team like this,?! what a great idea!! Characters are incredibly lovable-the crime is reality based and believable. Excellent narration, Daniels emotes Rutherford's frustration perfectly. If this ever was used as a potential film or tv series, then I want to invest!! I really hope Scott Meyer brings forth a sequel, just literary gold! (gold as honey, that is)

If you enjoyed Magic 2.0 then this story is for you. The story was great and funny and the narrator was awesome as always.

Hope there's a sequel

Sort of like Charlie's Angels meet scorpion.
The characters in this book are more interesting than either one of the above.
I sure hope there's a sequel

Great performance, mediocre book...

The voice acting was on point. However, the story was just meh. If it weren't for the narrator, I'm not sure I would 've really enjoyed the book...
