Publisher's Summary

Sherlock Holmes is an unparalleled genius who uses the gift of deduction and reason to solve the most vexing of crimes. Warlock Holmes, however, is an idiot. A good man, perhaps; a font of arcane power, certainly. But he's brilliantly dim. Frankly, he couldn't deduce his way out of a paper bag. The only things he really has going for him are the might of a thousand demons and his stalwart flatmate. Thankfully, Dr. Watson is always there to aid him through the treacherous shoals of Victorian propriety and save him from a gruesome death every now and again.

An imaginative, irreverent, and addictive reimagining of the world's favorite detective, Warlock Holmes retains the charm, tone, and feel of the original stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle while finally giving the flat at 221b Baker Street what it's been missing for all these years: an alchemy table. Reimagining six stories, this riotous mash-up is a glorious new take on the ever-popular Sherlock Holmes myth, featuring the vampire Inspector Vladislav Lestrade; the ogre Inspector Torg Grogsson; and Dr. Watson, the true detective at 221b. And Sherlock. A warlock.

Short on Clues--Heavy on Delightful Twists

Don't expect much in the way of in-depth mysteries here, or on heavy duty clues (altho' there are some pretty hilarious "observations"). Do, however, expect plenty of twists on the well-known Holmes plots. Denning has crafted a delightful supernatural romp-"thriller" that has PLENTY of memorable characters (rat-boys, anyone?) to tickle even the most ennui-ridden funny bone. Robert Garson does an exquisite job voicing the many, many characters, and he especially brings the quirkiness of both Watson and Holmes to life. Excellent job, tho' it did indeed end too soon. The only thing worse than a waste of money is a waste of time. "Warlock Holmes" is neither of those: very much worth the chuckles and pittance.

Action, Comedy, Fantasy done well

The pacing of this book is really well done. It felt way too short just because I kept listening to it so much. With it being an audio book and never looking at the progress bar, I didn't have an idea I was reaching the end. Afterwards I was just left with a feeling of "What! That's it...." Looking forward to the next book.
Really good mix of action, comedy and fantasy. And managed good character development. Reminded me of Jeeves and Wooster.

Clever Concept

I did not engage with this book. I had to force myself to listen, not because it was bad or the reader wasn't good (he was excellent at voices and accents), but because there I got the feeling that the author was nudging me and saying, "You see what I did there?" I just got tired of it, I'm afraid.

Sherlock with a twist

The reader provided an entertaining experience with the various character voices for this story. The story for Sherlock Holmes fans was a fun twist on the traditional stories, adding a supernatural twist. If you aren't familiar with Sherlock Holmes, it might not be as entertaining as a stand alone set if shirt stories.

Extreme pastiche with "cliffhanger"

What made the experience of listening to Warlock Holmes the most enjoyable?

I don't like pastiche, but I must have needed some, because I enjoyed this book. However, I don't think I would have done so were I not a Holmes aficionado - and feeling frustrated and rebellious. And it's winter.

The two main characters are extremely well voiced and I don't think this book would have worked without that, since it is the wonderful reversal of the characters that makes it work.

The book ended in a cliffhanger, which I absolutely hate. However, I'm not as worked up about that as usual, since the last few sentences include what I'm sure would have solved the problem (or at least changed it) if only the book had gone on for another 5 minutes.

Superb!

A must read - listen - for all Sherlock Holmes. lovers and non-fan's, too. A wonderful homage, tribute and re-imagination of the famous detective. The narration is one if not the best of all that i have encountered. The only drawback i can say is the book is too short but i am sure there will be more coming.

Cannot wait for the next one!!!

Would you listen to Warlock Holmes again? Why?

I didn't know what to expect, however, I was pleasantly surprised!! Fun listen and really hooks the listener. I very much enjoyed the story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Holmes by far, because he is so daffy!!

Have you listened to any of Robert Garson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

The "other" Holmes detective.

Any additional comments?

Loved it. Will purchase the next one!!

Parody?

It's sort of a parody of Sherlock Holmes. A what if? The thing that wasn't enjoyable was that the author took Sherlock Holmes stories and stole nearly every aspect of them with fairly predictable changes to the world where Holmes only is able to pull off his extraordinary feats by the use of actual magic. Watson, on the other hand has Sherlock's abilities of observation and deduction. I tried to enjoy it. The narrator was good, but at times, it seemed he would pause to try to stomach the less than tasteful contrivances he had to perform. I have never left a negative review of any book before. I applaud the author for sticking to it and writing a book... But maybe the next one should have some more creativity and craft. This just doesn't work.

Hard to characterize, but fun

I picked this up because season 4 of Sherlock ended and I was in the mood for more of one of my favorite detection teams. I thought this sounded interesting, and boy, was I right!

I enjoy a good paranormal book occasionally and I was pleasantly surprised to find that is a prevalent element to this book. If you're a fan of more than just the series and have read Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's books, you will recognize many familiar stories with an odd slant and a paranormal twist. I really enjoyed when I remembered details of the original and then a fanciful twist was written.

I will confess that I was on the fence about this book for about an hour. As a fan of "normal Sherlock" it was great hard to grapple with this clueless Warlock. I tried to not hold my love for Sherlock against Warlock and I am glad I did. This is an entertainin, for me anyway, take on one of my favorite classics.

The narrator was new to me, but did he an excellent job. Great voices for different characters and wondered pacing. B.
