Florida Gothic Stories contains 11 of Vicki Hendricks’ best, some previously published and some new to this volume. Hendricks’ stories are riveting and unsettling - some offer surreal sojourns into the dark side of magical realism while others are pure Florida noir, with a full menu of characters twisted and damaged, yet with a gritty determination to survive.
Hendricks’ imagination knows no boundaries and plumbs the depths of both the human and nonhuman psyche, where the unexpected waits at every plot twist and animal instincts can kick into action at the snap of a twig. Hendricks is a major stylist, winning high praise from the likes of Michael Connelly, Megan Abbott, and Dennis Lehane.
This may be my favorite of Vicki Hendricks's Audible releases.
These stories span the state and its characters--eccentrics, floozies and people trying to get by--and they span genres from horror to fantasy to erotica all with a grounded sense of humor.
She pulls it off. The more fantastic the story, the more it rings emotionally true.

I was born in Florida 70 years ago. I'm not a prude, I'd listen to the storys again but not with the narraters nasel incorrect accent. You'll find the same storys in any state so it that isn't what appals me, it's that horrible accent with the adnoidal, 'I have alleries', voice.

Should have been listed as mild erotica. A real disappointment to a lover of gothic novels. This does not qualify as gothic.
Any additional comments?
I have never asked for a refund for an Audible book before, but I am seriously considering doing so for this.
Thank you Audible for allowing me to return something that was not for me - I should have read reviews more closely and checked the reviews on Amazon as well on this one. While this may be for some people, I just could not get into this book at all.
I guess I need to go back and look at the definition of gothic - I was thinking more in line with ghosts and spooky, and maybe it gets there later in the book but ......
