A Cursed Toy!

Is a horror story even worth listening to if Joe Hempel isn't narrating it?

'Deadlocked Dollhouse' was a suspenseful and fun listen about a man who struggles to provide for his family, only to bring home a gift that will ruin it all. The dollhouse in question, a thrift store find, becomes an obsession for more than one family member and as the cursed toy reels the family in, the chances of their survival becomes less and less. It's not the most unique cursed-toy story I've ever enjoyed, but it is certainly worth the listen if you like the horror genre. Also, as previously stated, it's narrated by Joe Hempel so, it's really a no brainer!

Excellent creepy supernatural tale. must listen

I am very much looking forward to more from Mixi J. Applebottom. This was a great, creep tale. Very reminiscent of some great classic 70's horror stories. The style of writing is very similar to Ambrose Ibsen, one of my favorites, and the fact that it is narrated by Joe Hempel just made that connection clearer. The story is taut and finely paced. The protaganist and antagonist are both well defined. There is a good mystery to the story with a nice history. Very well written supernatural tale. Highly recommend.

Mr. Hempel does it again. By far, one of my favorites. He just has the grasp on the every-man and has a way about defining the angst and anxiety of a man scared to death and searching for answers.

I requested a free review copy of this audiobook and i am leaving an honest and voluntary review.

I really wanted some ice cream after this

This was like the dibbuk box story, but much better and in a doll house. This story started out really quick and didn’t let up until the end. A rush of seven different stages of a curse that get worse with each stage. As each new stage unfolds you get sucked deeper into the emotional despair and physical abuse that the family Is dealing with. Each little broken bone and bloody nose just pushes you further and further towards the edge of your seat. This story is full of tension and anxiety and I couldn’t stop listening. The further I got into the story the more I felt for the family and their plight.

As a family man, any kind of tragic family story always cause me immediate distress. A father with a bad upbringing trying to raise his daughters better than he was raised is a great plot line that any parent can sympathize with. Unfortunately, it doesn’t turn out the way Mark planned. Mark is really a solid character and I sympathized with him. His attempt to get his wife on board felt like the author knew how my family life was. Seemed like she was sitting in my kitchen taking notes.

Joe Hempel did a fantastic job. His ability to bring the words to life and really make you feel them is second to none. The tension he brings to this story was perfect and definitely increased my blood pressure while listening. Joe is truly the voice of horror. First book I've listened to by Mixi J. Applebottom and it won't be the last. Excited to see what is next in this series.

Creepy but not scary

Mike just wants to provide for his family and be a good father. Definitely a better father than his. He finds this perfect little dollhouse at a thrift store for almost nothing, and buys it for his girls. Shortly afterwards strange things start happening and it seems that there is no way of escaping the curse put on the dollhouse.

This was an entertaining book. It’s clear from the start where the problem resides, and the reader witnesses each character’s irremediable decline. I think it would have worked better if the characters were a bit more developed. It was easy to connect with Mike, but more character development would have made me care more about him and his family.

There are some creepy scenes but overall I didn’t find the book really scary. It was a bit predictable, and I would have liked more character development and more details. I think I would have enjoyed it as a longer and more polished book.

Joe Hempel, as always, did an excellent job narrating the story and bringing the characters to life. The book was made better by the narration, since Hempel is great at creating the right atmosphere for this kind of stories. Hempel gave each character a voice and a distinctive style, creating the illusion of having several real people.

too short but worth a listen for horror fans

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

So, I picked this book up just because Joe Hempel was the narrator and I love a good horror story. I definitely liked the cursed toy thing. Very Anabel-esq which was cool (but a dollhouse instead of a doll). My only complaint is that it's too short.

Watch out for this doll house . . .

This was great! I loved both the story and the narration. I've never read anything by Mixi Applebottom before, but will certainly be checking out her other work. Oddly, having a haunted dollhouse is something my son and I have been joking about for a couple of years, so I was really happy to see the theme actually done. It did not disappoint.

The narration by Joe Hempel was flawless, as usual. He can make a mediocre book of this genre into a five star listen. This time, though, the story was good in its own right.

I received a promotional copy of this book for free at my request, but this review is totally voluntary.
