Publisher's Summary

A novel of suspense, family ties, and twisted passions from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Obsession...

The Bodine ranch and resort in western Montana is a family business, an idyllic spot for vacationers. A little over thirty thousand acres and home to four generations, it's kept running by Bodine Longbow with the help of a large staff, including new hire Callen Skinner. There was another member of the family once: Bodine's aunt, Alice, who ran off before Bodine was born. She never returned, and the Longbows don't talk about her much. The younger ones, who never met her, quietly presume she's dead. But she isn't. She is not far away, part of a new family, one she never chose - and her mind has been shattered...

When a bartender leaves the resort late one night, and Bo and Cal discover her battered body in the snow, it's the first sign that danger lurks in the mountains that surround them. The police suspect Cal, but Bo finds herself trusting him - and turning to him as another woman is murdered and the Longbows are stunned by Alice's sudden reappearance. The twisted story she has to tell about the past - and the threat that follows in her wake - will test the bonds of this strong family, and thrust Bodine into a darkness she could never have imagined.

    "One of her best!"

Although I wasn't sure at first if I was going to like it, this book turned out to be one of my favorites by Nora Roberts. There were times in the story when it broke my heart. Alice was braver and more resilient than many people would have been in that situation. The support of her family and community was amazing. There are many strong characters in this book to help keep the plot strong. I will definitely be listening to this book again.

    "Heart-rending story... good overcomes misogyny"

4.5 - NR can be hit or miss with me but when I love her...I REALLY love her. And I loved this one. With NR you know what you're going to get, and Come Sundown is no exception: light romance, a disturbing mystery, strong and independent female heroine, bull-headed yet kind and sensitive male hero, disgusting excuse for a human being baddie, and the good guys always win, the bad guys always get what's coming to them, and love conquers all. But this one seemed to go deeper than a typical NR novel, she doesn't seem to rely quite so much on the usual plot conveniences, and there is a definite message which borrows on disturbing themes right out of our current climate. At the rate NR pumps out a story, I have to assume she's been influenced by recent turns in the social and political zeitgeist. Anyway, excellent story, plot, characters, setting, and emotional build-up. In fact, I teared up a few times over some breakthrough moments for a very damaged character. A good novel is designed to play with the reader's emotions, but if not done well, it can feel like contrived manipulations unless cleverly arranged to build upon smartly written plot points, world-building, and character development. These moments felt so authentic, it was like I was there experiencing them with the characters. I have a few quibbles, but very few...not enough to expound upon nor ruin my experience. This is a great book for NR fans and also a good choice for a first NR read, especially for those reticent to give her a try. NR is not going to break into any exciting new literary movements, but she is damn good storytelling.

    "Alright"

This book is alright. What really kept me coming back was Alice's story. I shed some tears for Alice and everything that she went through. While Bo and Cal are the main characters Alice's abduction and life are the real story lines. I have to say there was no real romance drama or real crazy romance story just a couple that used to be attracted to each other (when they were kids) that got reunited. Jesse and Chase's quirky romance was a lot more interesting. The narrator was great. She did a great Job bringing the characters to life. I always wish the ending included a bit more. The epilogue needed to be more detailed maybe a look into the future.

    "Nora wins"

The thing about Nora is that she just really understands how to get you invested in a character. One big win for this book is that she went places with this style of book that I haven't seen yet. I've never read the In Death series so maybe that's where the similarities unfold. But if you like horses, strong Montana men and women, and characters with a spine I'd recommend this book. I found myself screaming "Run Alice, god damn it run!" which surprised me. There was a new layer to this story from Nora and I appreciated it. Nora always just wins for me because if I find the story mediocre I always enjoy the ride because of her characters. Narration was really great with a few slight exceptions of some male voices but overall wonderful performance. Worth the credit especially for the length.

"From JD Robb to Nora Roberts!"

I, an avid JD Robb listener, was hesitant to try a Nora Roberts book - I thought it would be mushy romance, but I was pleasantly surprised to find strong female characters and multiple mysteries! I LOVED this book!

"Best Nora Roberts I've read in a long time"

I really enjoyed this book. The western theme hit me close to home. The characters were very alive & dynamic. I loved Sunset. My heart broke for Alice. The narrator did a great job making each voice unique. My only complaint, and I did not take off for this, was that the ending was a tiny bit predictable. But overall it was a great book to listen to on audible. I would recommend this for anyone who enjoys Nora Roberts. This was her at her best.

    "Emotional read / listen"

I pretty much listened to it all at once, with a long nap to get me through.
The story addresses a difficult subject and often had me in tears and on the edge of my seat. NR built a strong family and community in this story. With that said, there are typical NR aspects that you'll recognize from other NR stories if you are a fan.
This is one that I'll listen to again - but not right away.

    "Totally Awesome book "

This book was so different from the normal Nora Roberts that I have grown to love. As I listened to it I could picture the horrific way Alice was treated and feel her heartbreak over the babies Sir took away. I pictured the ranch and resort. The characters as always become real people and make you feel emotions and hope for them and their families. I will definitely recommend this book to everyone who reads her books and anyone who doesn't yet.
Ms.Roberts is an awesome writer and this book is another shining example of how well she does it.

    "Excellent"

It was another fantastic story by Nora Roberts. Just finished it and going to read it again, loved it. It is different from other books of hers that I've read, I cried and laughed and was shocked by some of the revelations. It still has a lovely romance to it. All round excellent read. Another amazing book by Nora Roberts.
