Publisher's summary

Cloister Witte is a man with a dark past and a cute dog. He’s happy to talk about the dog all day, but after growing up in the shadow of a missing brother, a deadbeat dad, and a criminal stepfather, he’d rather leave the past back in Montana. These days, he’s a K-9 officer in the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and pays a tithe to his ghosts by doing what no one was able to do for his brother - find the missing and bring them home.

He’s good at solving difficult mysteries. The dog is even better.

This time, the missing person is a 10-year-old boy who walked into the woods in the middle of the night and didn’t come back. With the antagonistic help of distractingly handsome FBI Agent Javi Merlo, it quickly becomes clear that Drew Hartley didn’t run away. He was taken, and the evidence implies he’s not the kidnapper’s first victim. As the search intensifies, old grudges and tragedies are pulled into the light of day. But with each clue they uncover, it looks less and less likely that Drew will be found alive.

Intriguing mystery suspense

This book is an intriguing mystery suspense. Both Cloister and Javi are interesting complex characters. this story has a sexual relationship but it is not a romance but that's OK because it fits these men really well.
The story starts out as one missing child case and evolves into much more spanning several missing persons and years. I was shocked and love a good mystery I don't guess in the first few pages or in this case, not at all.

Cloister's dog is the main character as well and I love how she was written into the story. I would love more of these guys!

The narration was spot on. both men had very clear voices and the pacing was great. I think the narration really made this book.

Good Mystery

Only 4 stars because there wasn’t a HEA :(. Other than that, I really enjoyed the story. It was a really good mystery. Java was a total ass in the beginning but I did fall for him as the story continued. I loved Cloister and his K-9. They were a great pair. I would have liked that Cloister was still investigating his brother’s disappearance, even though there was a lot of years since it happened. I would love a sequel so that we actually got these two in a relationship and maybe some closure with Cloister‘s missing brother. Oh and I love when one of my favorite authors make mention of characters from another of my favorite authors.

Great story. Great narration.

This book is one of my favorite types of stories, a layered mystery with clues leading to a bigger story arc that also includes a dash of romance. The author did justice to my favorite type of story. The fact that a dog is a main character is an extra perk... really. It couldn't possibly be the reason I picked up this book in the first place . 😏

The mystery is thought provoking, the characters are engaging, and the setting is beautifully illustrated. The narration was well performed and suited the rhythm of the writing.

I rarely offer up five stars for a first read/listen, but I was tempted for this book because I want to listen to it again already.

I wanted to like it but not my jam.

I tried twice to listen to this and found there were big sections I skipped over. The bad line story has great promise and was interesting, but there was more violent sexual content than story. Others may enjoy. Just not for me.

Excellent ebook and audiobook

This is a wonderful mystery, suspense story. The lead characters are gay men but are not romantic in nature so there is sex but no romance. The ending us satisfactory but not necessarily an HEA. These just aren’t that kind of men.
Cloister Witte is a deputy sheriff and a K9 handler. He has a tragedy in his past that he doesn’t like to talk about but it does affect him and his job. He also has the strangest first name. Thanks, Mom. The dog Cloister is partnered with, Bourneville, is a seriously important character in the story. I loved the way she was written.
FBI Special Agent Javi Merlo has the hots for Deputy Witte but it’s all about the sex, not a relationship. I do believe both men would like to take this farther but are so damaged they can’t quite do that.
Cloister and Javi are initially searching for a missing boy but the case widens to include a number of victims over a span of years. The mystery of who is responsible and why is so cleverly written I didn’t figure it out until it was revealed.
I would love to read more about Javi and Cloister so I hope there will be another story about them.
I listened to the audiobook and also read the ebook. The narrator was excellent and the book was really well written.

Loved it!

Loved Javier and Cloister. They had great chemistry. Storyline was good. My only complaint was the ending. They should have done an epilogue or something more to tie up the romance.
