Publisher's Summary

It's summer on Nantucket, and as the season begins, three women arrive at the local airport, observed by Josh, a local boy, home from college. Burdened with small children, unwieldy straw hats, and some obvious emotional issues, the women - two sisters and one friend - make their way to the sisters' tiny cottage, inherited from an aunt.

They're all trying to escape from something: Melanie, after seven failed in-vitro attempts, discovered her husband's infidelity and then her own pregnancy; Brenda embarked on a passionate affair with an older student that got her fired from her prestigious job as a professor in New York; and her sister Vickie, mother to two small boys, has been diagnosed with cancer. Soon Josh is part of the chaotic household, acting as babysitter, confidant, and, eventually, something more, while the women confront their pasts and map out their futures.

OMG...spoiler alert:

I am cancer free as of now(about two and a half years after diagnosis) and this book really hit me hard. I would buy it again despite the knowledge I have after reading it.

Just ok.

It was a fine book to pass the time, but wasn’t great. I wouldn’t recommend to my girlfriends. Her newest book, The Perfect Couple, is leaps and bounds better than this. I read that one first and was hoping her other books would be just as good. Disappointed.

You will be able to smell the sunscreen.

I can't recommend this book enough, it is everything a summer novel should be and more. I was completely immersed in it from start to finish and have such a clear picture of each of the characters, the cottage, the beach in my minds eye. The dynamic of the sisters is one that anyone with a sister can understand and the plot will suck you right in. By the end you will hope you can meet up with everyone next summer in Nantucket. Love. Love. Love.

a lot of drama

there are a lot of relationships in this story and the author goes deep into it. in a good way. I enjoy the depth of the character stories but the story itself wasn't riveting. it was a bit predictable.

Not my favorite Hildebrand book.

I love her books but this one needed better character development. Not her best book.

Not my Favorite by Hilderbrand.

Would you try another book from Elin Hilderbrand and/or Rachael Warren?

Yes, Elin Hilderbrand is one of my favorite authors.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The personal stories of the 3 girls and Josh.

Which character – as performed by Rachael Warren – was your favorite?

Thought she did a good job with the Aussie John Walsh.

Could you see Barefoot being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Yes, not sure about which stars!

Any additional comments?

Story was a bit somber for me. And a bit long-winded. I can see how someone battling cancer would really relate to and love this story. I love Hilderbrand, but this novel has been my least favorite so far.
