I love Nancy Thayer's style of writing

I love her writing. Even loving it there were places in this book a good editor could have made better. Books are so fast most of the time now. I love NT takes the time to weave the story and capture you. I resented the narrator. I realize she has to give different voices but folks from Kansa do not have that much SOUTHERN accent. I found 11 yrs loving and not showing or doing anything about to be unbelievable. However I love stories built around a family like this one!

Disappointing

Would you ever listen to anything by Nancy Thayer again?

I've listened to several of Nancy Thayer's books and enjoy them for their humor and interesting characters. Unfortunately, this book had neither. I found myself skipping whole chapters just to make it to the end. I would try another of her books in the future hoping that she goes back to the style in her earlier writing.

What about Emily Sutton-Smith’s performance did you like?

I thought the narrator was very good. She was able to differentiate characters w/ change in voice.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

I found the main character to be extremely shallow, unlikeable and downright annoying, particularly her repetitive desire to create babies with perfect genes. I found myself hoping that both men would dump her!

I do not recommend

This was probably the worst book I’ve ever read/listened to. The story didn’t flow. The characters weren’t developed. Three separate couples had at least one party that was instantly in love. Without dating or anything. Just in love. I wouldn’t recommend this book.

Terrible

I have read Thayer before and enjoyed the book. This one was very repetitive. Before purchase, I read the details. The main character was named "Jenny" not Karina! The characters were not developed. None of the relationships were believable. I wish I had not purchased this book. I wanted money. I also wasted my time.

Not Typical Thayer

I waited with anticipation for the next Thayer read. This was for me elementary Thayer. Her books are usually much more captivating. This read was very predictable, and just not enough depth. All authors seem to slip in their work. I would say this book is that slip.

Southern accent on a Midwesterner?

The narration of the Midwesterners sounding like a southern is odd. I have to keep reminding myself Courtney is from Kansas not Arkansas.

Narration

I enjoyed this book but the narrator consistently used a southern accent for characters from the Midwest which I found to be inauthentic.

Not her best

What would have made The Island House better?

A story with a bit more substance and less fragmented plotline. The characters lacked depth and were not fully developed.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Jane Casey, After the Fire

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Emily Sutton-Smith?

No other narrator could have saved this story.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Boredom and disappointment.

Any additional comments?

I always look forward to Ms Thayer's books but this one was truly a letdown.
