Publisher's Summary

Now a major motion picture.

Jane Hayes is a seemingly normal young New Yorker, but she has a secret. Her obsession with Mr. Darcy, as played by Colin Firth in the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, is ruining her love life: no real man can compare. But when a wealthy relative bequeaths her a trip to an English resort catering to Austen-crazed women, Jane's fantasies of meeting the perfect Regency-era gentleman suddenly become realer than she ever could have imagined.

Decked out in empire-waist gowns, Jane struggles to master Regency etiquette and flirts with gardeners and gentlemen: or maybe even, she suspects, with the actors who are playing them. It's all a game, Jane knows. And yet the longer she stays, the more her insecurities seem to fall away, and the more she wonders: Is she about to kick the Austen obsession for good, or could all her dreams actually culminate in a Mr. Darcy of her own?

"Frothy, Funny, and Smart With a Fantastic Narrator"

When I started listening to a lot of audiobooks, one of the weird things that happened is that I started a mental To-Be-Read list of not just authors that I wanted to check out, but narrators too. I started picking up on names that have been recommended by my audio buddies, shown up in reviews, and won awards. Well, I finally got to cross narrator Katherine Kellgren off my audio TBR, and she was just as stellar as I'd hoped she would be!

In Austenland, a wealthy matriarch bequeaths a Mr. Darcy-obsessed woman with an all-expenses-paid trip to a Pride and Prejudice themed retreat where guests and actors spend a month in period costume as Regency era characters. (With bonus smooching for guests on the platinum package.) The story itself is frothy, funny, and smart, but it was Katherine Kellgren’s performance that really made it for me. She’s a super versatile voice actress, and her entire cast of characters was hilarious — the dour Regency hostess, the hot Irish gardener, the rich American trophy wife whose fake accent is more Alabama than England, the standoffish but frustratingly handsome (because of course) nephew, etc. etc. Kellgren's performance of Austenland is entertaining, sweet, and perfect light listening for any season.

I watched the movie first, which is rare for me. I must say I loved the movie more, also rare. I didnt like some of the voices. It is a nice story though.

Any moment that contained Mr. Nobley.

A delightful, light listen for a Pride & Prejudice fan. The story is entertaining, funny and sweetly romantic. Well read by the narrator

    "Wonderful Story for Austen Fans"
Where does Austenland rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Definitely towards the top. I mean, Katherine Kellgren alone makes the listen worth it. Add a great story and you've got yourself an excellent audiobook.

What about Katherine Kellgren’s performance did you like?

    Literally everything.

    Any additional comments?

This was one of those "I saw the movie first" for me but I still enjoyed this book like I had no idea of what the plot was. Jane (our heroine) basically goes to a magical place where she gets to live in Jane Austen's world - complete with bonnets and corsets. I seriously wish this was a real place. HIGHLY recommend.

    "Loved it! Will listen again."

I chose this book because I loved the movie. There were differences, but I was glad to find out that the movie mostly stayed true to the original version. There is just more to love with the book. I will listen to this book again - and I don't do that with many books. Great author, great narrator (loved the voices for each character!), and great story overall.

    "Loved the movie..."

And loved the book! It's nice and light with enough humour to make you laugh out loud. It made me realize that I'm not so unique in how I can personally relate to Austen's heroines as Shannon Hale hit the nail right on the head with this book with the frustration and disappointment of it all. Excellent performance by the narrator Katherine Kellgren as well. Looking forward to the next book!

    "Impressive writing in both books"

I would have rated this book 5 stars across the board, but I prefer 2nd book in this duology d/t more action/less internal dialogue. Both are best books I've ever read that link the reader to classic literature without sacrificing the story. Most feel preachy or talking down to reader to me. I only wish that Shannon Hale had written more books with heroines over age 19.
