Publisher's Summary

At 30 years of age, Susan Jennings has long been considered a spinster. Exceptionally intelligent, she has little tolerance for London and the dreaded Season - if that’s how one is expected to find love, it’s not for her. But when an invitation arrives that cannot be ignored, Susan leaves her comfortable life in the country and enters the fashion and frivolity she most despises. She quickly discovers, however, that there is more to loathe in London - and his name is George Kendall.

George, Duke of Aylesham, has learned to keep his distance from cloying females chasing the title of duchess. Susan Jennings, however, proves an entirely different challenge - a woman who has pushed him to the limit of his patience with their every encounter. But their simmering hostility is disrupted by a thoughtless slipup: to avoid a marriage of political strategy, George claims he is already betrothed. And when pressed for the name of the lucky woman, only one name comes to mind: Susan’s. Their forced betrothal proves advantageous, but when their verbal sparring must change in order to be convincing, the line between fact and fiction becomes blurred by something neither expected: love.

Clean regency romance, with a hint of marriage of convenience

The story was a great clean regency romance, with a little bit of the feel of a marriage of convenience story. While the characters were not married, they were actually thrown into and engagement of convenience. If you like the steamy sex scenes, this is not for you. However, if you enjoy the clean regency romance, like me, this is a great book to curl up with. I enjoyed the characters, the premise, and the history.

Charming romance

I loved the premise of the book. There were some holes in the development of the characters and plot. Overall it was an entertaining listen.

Such A Delight!

What a story! I’ve been telling everyone of my family that they truly must read this book and, if possible, listen to the audible version as well. I absolutely laughed out loud as I began to listen to this driving home from my daughter’s house. I knew immediately this was going to be a winner. George and Susan are delightful. Honestly! …and so romantic! I love Susan‘s family and I loved so many of the supporting characters. Ultimately I just really love this book and highly, highly recommend it.

The audible narration was totally spot on as well!

Credit wasted

Story flows too slow spending too much time on politics and unneccessary dialogs. At times boring. Terrible narration. Placing emphasize at wrong words for dramatic effects that are not needed. Spend your credit on something more enjoyable.

Pleasant historical romance.

Pleasant romantic historical fiction story. Not wildly original in theme, but entertaining nonetheless. I liked the main characters. Narration is very good and adds to the overall quality of this Audible book. In general, I enjoyed it.

Very enjoyable and excellent narration

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The narration was absolutely excellent especially when she was speaking in German. The narrator made you feel like you were there. The characters were likeable and it had a pretty good storyline too. Highly recommend

Very nice

Excellent characters and fun story. Pleasantly free from angst and internal thoughts so rampant in this genre. And the clean story is really appreciated. A well-written tale does not need to rely on filler bedroom scenes. One critique is that the writer doesn’t trust her readers to keep up and understand, as she frequently explains what’s just been said or done as if we wouldn’t have known the meaning without her extra explanatory words. They shouldn’t have been there in the first place, and a good editor could have slashed them out. There is also a bit of play-by-play on minor unimportant details as well as a few modernisms. But it’s a good story, so it was easy to overlook them. The narrator does a much better job in this one than in the next one.

Excellent read

Very well written, engaging and easy to listen too. I just wish we would have been able to experience the wedding night with them as well.

Regency with a touch of Magic

“My mind never wanders. It goes precisely where I want it to go.”

Do you live an enemies to lovers troupe? I do, which is strange because I don’t think if I had an enemy in real life that I would eventually be friends and then lovers with him. But it’s never happened, so I don’t know!

What I do love about this one is that Susan and George had a very unfortunately first meeting where each was awful to the other. “His Loftiness” and “The Harpey” - as they each nicknamed the other - had one bad thing experience and then didn’t see each other for another YEAR! I like that the time had last, sometimes I feel that books love too quickly. But then after this, a misfortune tells event with the Prince Regent had George stuck into a corner; thankfully, Susan was willing to help him out of it, but she needed lots of convincing from her “fairy godmother”, aka Lady Womsley, aka Aunt Margret.

Overall, this was a quick, sweet read that I thoroughly enjoyed listening too! The narrator was excellent, especially with all the accents and German! This was my first book by this author, but it will NOT BE the LAST!
