It's not you; it's your schedule. Does it sound like magic? It's not. We've all heard of circadian rhythms - those biological processes that give us jet lag and make us night owls or early birds. But few of us know just how profoundly these diurnal patterns affect our overall health. Bad habits - like skipping meals, squeezing in workouts, working late into the night and then trying to catch up on sleep during the weekend - disrupt our natural cycles. A growing body of research on chronobiology reveals just how sensitive the human body is to these rhythms all the way down to the genetic level.

The benefits of restrictive diets like paleo and keto have been touted for more than a decade, but as renowned gastroenterologist Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, or "Dr. B", illuminates in this groundbreaking audiobook, the explosion of studies on the microbiome makes it abundantly clear that elimination diets are in fact hazardous to our health. What studies clearly now show - and what Dr. B preaches with his patients - is that gut health is the key to boosting our metabolism, balancing our hormones, and taming the inflammation that causes a host of diseases.

Publisher's summary
A revolutionary prescription for healing depression and anxiety and optimizing brain health through the foods we eat, including a six-week plan to help you get started eating for better mental health.
Depression and anxiety disorders are rising, affecting more than 58 million people in the United States alone. Many rely on therapy and medications to alleviate symptoms, but often this is not enough. Now, we know there has been a missing factor. With the latest scientific advances in neuroscience, nutrition, and the mind-gut connection, we have discovered that how and what we eat greatly affects how we feel, physically, cognitively, and emotionally.
Our brains consume 20 percent of everything we eat. And when the brain is deprived of essential nutrients, we suffer. In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Drew Ramsey helps us forge a path toward greater mental health through food. Eat to Beat Depression and Anxiety breaks down the science of nutritional psychiatry and explains what you should eat to positively effect brain health and improve mental wellness.
Dr. Ramsey distills the latest research groundbreaking research on nutrition and the brain. By focusing on increasing brain cell health (neruoplasticity), reducing inflammation, and cultivating a healthy microbiome, he discusses the 12 essential vitamins and minerals most critical to your brain and body as well as anti-inflammatory foods that feed the gut. Ramsey helps listeners to assess barriers to self-nourishment and offers techniques for enhancing motivation. To get us started, he provides a kick-starter Six-Week Depression and Anxiety Mental Health Food Plan to incorporate key food categories, like leafy greens and seafood, along with simple, delicious, brain-nutritious recipes.

The perfect balance of science and action steps
First, I am so grateful that Dr. Ramsey narrated his book. Narration by the author makes a world of difference. Dr. Ramsey provides just the right amount of science to substantiate his recommendations, in a straightforward, easy-to-understand way. I love the stories and examples he provides from his own life and patients as they made the book personal and authentic. The reason I stumbled upon this book in the first place is that after a few weeks of eating primarily whole, unprocessed foods, I noticed my chronic “blue mood” significantly improved. This was a huge awakening for me, especially given that I’ve been on and off antidepressants for my entire adult life. This book confirmed that food really is medicine. It gave me all the information and direction I need to up the ante and take this journey of eating to feel better to the next level.

Excellent Book
This is an excellent book! After listening to it, I was able to start a healthy eating plan, eating foods that are good for and that I like, based on the author's recommendations. I found it was helpful for me to create a weekly checklist with the recommended foods that I like, and note how many times a week I should eat them. This has been incredibly helpful in meal planning to ensure I eat enough serving of the right food each day. I have been focusing on the foods TO eat instead of the foods NOT TO eat. By the time I eat all the healthy food for my brain, I am not hungry enough to consume junk food! I've been following the recommendations in the book for three weeks with ease (since I'm eating foods I like) and I have found my mood to be stable with little to no anxiety. I have finally discovered a healthy eating plan I can stick to with ease! Side note, I have also lost 5 lbs! :)

Must read!
This book was suggested by my physician and I’m so glad I listened to it. It comes with pdf of journal example, recipes, and small steps to take when changing your diet. This book isn’t expecting you to make changes over night and gives you the tools that you need. The audible was great, and very easy to listen. The first few chapters are full of scientific data. After the 4th chapter, it is all useful information for those trying to improve their diets. And it even gives options for those with limits to their diet by health, religious beliefs, or choice.

Diet to tickle your ears
Ramsey is obviously influenced by his farming past and doesn't look to scientifically scrutinise nise his own ideology. This book, like so many other diet books, adds to the white noise of confusion and disillusion of what is the healthiest human diet. He goes as far as to try and convince vegetarians and vegans that eating meat is essential despite the obvious fact that our bodies are not designed to digest meat. He fails to look at the actual needs of the human body and is more concerned with providing "proper nutrition" over health.

Amazing information, thoughtfully written to understand and implement
This book has given me a path forward on my journey to eat for my health (physical and mental). I appreciate that he does not say do this one thing and your life will be magically better. He gives instruction and reminds us that we are humans who may also be struggling with mental health and that makes change even harder at times. He encourages us through his writing to take steps forward and give grace to ourselves when we eat something that may not be nourishing… I would recommend this book to anyone not limited to those with anxiety and depression! Anyone that wants to learn how to better feed their body and mind in a nourishing way.

Diagrams are missing from enhancement PDF
This audiobook kept referring to explanatory diagrams in the enhancement PDF which are not there. (only material from chapters 7 onwards is in the included PDF). I saw an interview with the author in which he was obviously very pleased with the illustrations and how helpful they were, so it was very disappointing to find them missing.
The text is good, as is the narration. The book is very informative and based on plenty of evidence. It is read by the author and his enthusiasm glows through. His approach is realistic and inspiring. I've read a few books on this topic and I found this one the easiest to follow, and the most motivating.
However the gaps around what is missing are frustrating. If you want a full understanding i guess you would be better to buy a copy of the print book, so I wouldn't recommend the audio version.

Story
Diet is an essential component of a client's clinical profile. Few therapists, however, have any nutritional training, and many don't know where to begin. In Nutrition Essentials for Mental Health, Leslie Korn provides clinicians with a practical guide to the complex relationship between what we eat and the way we think, feel, and interact with the world. Where there is mental illness there is frequently a history of digestive and nutritional problems. Digestive problems in turn exacerbate mental distress.

A rising number of people today are troubled by a phenomenon for which they don't know there's a name. This condition is called emotional inflammation - a state not unlike post-traumatic stress, but one that stems from simply living in today's tumultuous world. If you've suffered from sleep problems, hyperreactivity, persistent grief, or inescapable worry about the future - especially triggered by the nonstop news cycle - then you're probably dealing with emotional inflammation. The good news is: there's something you can do about it.
