Publisher's summary

The third installment in the best-selling DCI Daley series, packed with accurate police procedure and gritty, dark humour. The best of Scottish crime.

When a senior Edinburgh civil servant spectacularly takes his own life in Kinloch harbour, DCI Jim Daley comes face to face with the murky world of politics. To add to his woes, two local drug dealers lie dead, ritually assassinated. It's clear that dark forces are at work in the town. With his boss under investigation, his marriage hanging on by a thread, and his sidekick, DS Scott, wrestling with his own demons, Daley's world is in meltdown.

When strange lights appear in the sky over Kinloch, it becomes clear that the townsfolk are not the only people at risk. The fate of nations is at stake. Jim Daley must face his worst fears as tragedy strikes. This is not just about a successful investigation; it's about survival.

Mostly good, but

Good story, but at least one underlying element of the storyline that I thought should have been resolved in this book wasn’t. I found that annoying.

Most series I read, each book could be read as a stand-alone story, which is as it should be. I’m not really finding that true with this series.

A great book from a superb writer

I like the DCI Daley books. This is a complicated plot but still a lot of fun to read..

Tipped over into too gruesome for me

I’m quitting this series a few chapters into this book. It’s got too much tortuous detail of too much torture. I’m also not thrilled with the justification of a boss having an affair with a junior officer less than half his age. My dad was older than my mom by a good deal and her boss, but this still tips over into the aging male fantasy too much for me.

The narrator is great and I’m sure all the overweight aging men out there will enjoy the fabulous fantasy..,.

My new favourite crime writer and narrator!

I've listened to all of this series so far and absolutely LOVE the writing and the narrating. As a narrator myself, I have to say that David Monteath's narration is absolutely amazing! One book was narrated by a different person who did a reasonable job, but David is fantastic and thank goodness, he has narrated the rest of the series. The stories in this series are outstanding and the humor has me cracked up!! The case of local characters are so entertaining. Well done Denzil and David!!! :)

Lovely book

A Scottish mystery nicely read. But I would like to see a small pause between scenes. It can be confusing

Another adventure in this tiny rural town on the, west coast of Scotland- from which one can see Ireland. I had fun imagining the seagulls, the smell of the ocean,
the odd characters. This is a bit like getting off of a cruise ship and hanging around with different police officers, and their acquaintances- enjoying their stories and hopping into a squad car or onto a speed boat when calls come in. I like it. I'm reading my way through the bunch. Good narrator helps the folksy feeling.

Good story, bad engineering

I enjoyed the plot and I find the characters very interesting, although somewhat irritating. I cannot comprehend why the author is so invested in keeping Liz and Jim together, she's really a horrible person. I will listen to the next book, but if the domestic issues aren't handled better I don't know about another after that.
The corruption plot is very good and it's intriguing to follow along and try to determine who the villains are.
The narration is great, I love David Monteath's voices and accents BUT I don't know who the audio engineer is for this work - whoever they are, they're lousy. I kept having to switch the volume up and down to capture words and then try to lessen the deafness from the sudden blasts of sound. Ugh.

Old men and fantasyland leave me cold..

The first two books held so much promise. The reader is extremely talented, however the story got a bit buried under the authors need to justify? old men with young women looking for daddy figure. Wow, until now I've enjoyed the books but now I ponder, do I risk another book or do I cut my losses? Will the creepy stuff end will di turn into a man again or will he play daddy to a girl who looks like his wife? yuck! I just dont know.

Ignore poor reviews if you liked the first 2 books

I truly enjoy this series, the characters are interesting and continue to evolve with each new book. As with many readers, DC Scott is my favorite, his presence often brings a chuckle to anotherwise brutal situaltion. I am almost finished with book six, enjoying each book a little bit more. If you like the tv series Shetland Island, or the books, you will find this series to your liking.
