Publisher's Summary

Inspired by The Hobbit and begun in 1937, The Lord of the Rings is a trilogy that J.R.R. Tolkien created to provide "the necessary background of history for Elvish tongues". From these academic aspirations was born one of the most popular and imaginative works in English literature.

The Fellowship of the Ring, the first volume in the trilogy, tells of the fateful power of the One Ring. It begins a magnificent tale of adventure that will plunge the members of the Fellowship of the Ring into a perilous quest and set the stage for the ultimate clash between the powers of good and evil.

In this splendid, unabridged audio production of Tolkien's great work, all the inhabitants of a magical universe – hobbits, elves, and wizards – step colorfully into life. Rob Inglis' narration has been praised as a masterpiece of audio.

    "Excellent listening!"

I love that in this recording, we miss nothing of Tolkien's original story, including the songs. The voices of the narrorator are easy to follow and recognize. We love listening to this story as a family, and feel the pages come alive in this simple, yet thoughtfully prepared rendition.

    "persevered"

I struggled in the first half and almost quit. I was confused by names, bogged down in pointless historical details. The second half improved and it had a good finish so I am glad I completed it. I don't want to endure the battles of book 2 except it is a great connection with my 11 yr old grandson who loves these books

    "Just one unabridged version, SAD"

Bottom line: I did enjoy listening to this classic story. But - this is the only unabridged version of this series available? Sad! I found the narrator to be hard to understand at times with a heavy British accent, and it's hard enough not to lose track with so many strange names and places being tossed around all the time. Oh my gosh the singing, I am still cringing just to think about it days later. Awful, and a few of those songs were so long, I just had to grit my teeth and bear through it. Would have been MUCH better just to speak the words and not try to sing it - let the listener imagine the music. Ugh. I saw the movies a bazillion times and even though those movies cut and spliced and twisted the storylines to a large extent, to experience the dramatic and exciting way certain scenes were portrayed in the films and then to hear the flattened way that this narrator read the same scenes...it was disappointing. All in all I'm happy to have listened to this but then again it should have been done better. Maybe someday someone will.

    "Perfect Narrator"

I'm biased as I grew up enjoying Tolkien's work. So you know I'd rate the story as 5 stars. But if you are unsure of the plot, The Fellowship of the Ring is a classic, with lines you can relate at any age you read or listen. The narrator, in my honest opinion, is entertaining and I can easily imagine Tolkien speaking as Inglis throughout the narration.

    "This book is amazing!"

I only have seen the movies, and know I didn’t want to actually read the paper book. This audiobook is so amazing and full of action! I definitely recommend this to family and friends with audible.

    "GOAT fantasy novel"

unsure on the narrator's voice. very well read but still just ok. idk how to describe it better. did different voices that made sense to each character, sang the poems and songs, there's just something about his voice I didn't love. so no fault to him bc he executed perfect, just wish it was somebody else.
