Publisher's Summary

A landmark in children's literature, winner of the 1970 Newbery Medal, and the basis of an acclaimed film, Sounder traces the keen sorrow and the abiding faith of a poor African-American boy in the 19th-century South. The boy's father is a sharecropper, struggling to feed his family in hard times. Night after night, he and his great coon dog, Sounder, return to the cabin empty-handed. Then, one morning, almost like a miracle, a sweet-smelling ham is cooking in the family's kitchen. At last the family will have a good meal. But that night, an angry sheriff and his deputies come, and the boy's life will never be the same.

Critic Reviews

  • 1970 Newbery Medal Winner

"The magnificent trained bass of Avery Brooks is a beautiful compliment to Armstong's prose; words and voice clearly paint images and evoke emotional responses from the listener." (AudioFile)

Beautifully read

The language in this moving story approaches poetry, and the narrator, with his deep, resonant voice, captures the cadences.

Left me speechless

The narrator was amazing, and he brought this story to life. This book was one of those stories I had heard of but never read. Glad I read it with Avery Brooks narrating it. This book ripped my heart out and gave it back to me. short and amazing read. Another story which everyone should read to understand the stories and experiences of a lot of the minority living in the country.

Keeps stop'n

This is a very good book, i have read up to chapter 5 but i thought it would be nice to re-hear what i already read while wait'n to get in to see me Dr. but this audio book stops less than 15 minutes from the begin'n of the book, i'm mean'n from the begin'n of chapter 1, so i'm not real happy with the whole thing, truth be told i'm very unhappy,
