Debut novelist Wayne Caldwell's Cataloochee -a rich, vivid, arresting work beginning at the dawn of Reconstruction - sprawls across the succeeding generations like the vast green mountains of its rural North Carolina setting. Best-selling author Charles Frazier calls it "a brilliant portrait of a community and a way of life long gone, a lost America." This enthralling saga evokes the full color spectrum of mountain life, from lights to darks and every shade in between.©2007 Owlhead, Inc. Critic reviews

"A...diverting collection of tangential yarns, Caldwell's debut will find a spot on many readers' shelves near Charles Frazier's Thirteen Moons." ( Publishers Weekly)

This was excellent storytelling! I have visited the area many times and it was so easily relatable and culturally enriched with dialect and descriptions. Excellent story!

Great narration made it more relevant.

This book really added perspective to my recent trip to the Smoky Mtns of NC and Tenn. The story itself was entertaining and fairly well written, but to me the greatest value in this book is the true to life story it tells of life in the mountains in the time before the land was taken for the Smoky Mountains National Park. A 'must read' before visiting Cataloochee Valley and/or Cades Cove.

Great Historical Fiction

Loved the storyline and the process of following several characters from childhood to adulthood. The Editing could be better. One chapter would end with a thought provoking sentence, but before the listener could consider it, there’s an abrupt transition to the next chapter, announced very brusquely. A little spacing between chapters would be appreciated.

How deeply attached mountaineers are to their land.

I live very close to and volunteer in Cataloochee Valley. I appreciated learning some of it's history as many stories are true according to those born and bred here.

I have listened to this book twice now. One of my all time favorites. I have been to Cataloochee and am familiar with its history. This book and excellent narrator brought the magical place to life for me. I will listen again, and drive the 1700 miles to Cataloochee again. This book will make my trip there even more meaningful.

Love It!
