Great Narrator.

The stories in this collection are all of the highest possible quality; they are classics. So, what makes them a great or a not so great audio book is the narrator. This narrator is not an actor she is a story teller and a great one at that. I can listen to her voice for longer than any other narrator I have heard so far and I have over 200 titles in my library. If you are looking for someone who does all the imagination for you, you will be disappointed but if you are looking for someone who will wake up and enthrall your native imagination and let the beauty of the writing speak for itself then you will love it.

Wonderful selection of classic stories.

Some very obscure gems make for an interesting trip through the late 1800's/early 1900's. More 'haunting' than 'horrific', it still does include a few genuine chills.

Eccentric Reading

I love these stories, but I am having some trouble with Dobson's reading, and I mean no offense to her. Her accent and intonations are unusual, and somehow I find them... not conducive to paying attention. I guess I am having a hard time following the tone of the tales, so I get distracted and find I haven't been listening for 15-20 minutes. I start over, same problem. A bit sad because I love ghost stories so, and was looking forward to hours of them, but, not working for me.

I agree on narration

Good narration is the heart of an audiobook - cannot understand this narrator and
just gave up on it. And believe me, I listen to lots of ghost stories and mysteries.

Great stories ! Really annoying narrator !!

This is an interesting, diverse choice of stories of good quality.
I dread the narration.

Not happy with this purchase

The narrator was extremely dry and hard to understand when she changed her voice for multiple characters. It also sounds like she is trying to have a monotonous argument with herself.

The worst performance ever,

I just couldn’t stand listening to this women’s voice for another second after the third story! She ends every sentence with a reverberation!!! Total waste of money!

Fifty Classic Ghost Stories

Dreadfully read, with weird inappropriate intonation. Wouldn't recommend this to anyone and can't bear to listen to anymore. Hugely disappointing.

Text to speach

Beware, this is a Text-to-Speech automated reading and the appalling intonation makes it unlistenable nonsense.

Good Stories Completely Ruined

These are good stories but are completely ruined by the narrator. Cathy Dobson's voice is grating. I couldn't absorb the story being told due to her seriously irritating voice. Surely, somebody at Audible must listen to these before publishing.

Classic stories ruined by odd narration

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Yes, the narrator

What didn’t you like about Cathy Dobson’s performance?

Very odd inflection, inappropriate emphasis and narration completely unsympathetic to the stories, has the odd and luckily rare effect of making them hard to listen to. Don't waste a credit.

Any additional comments?

Buyer beware.

I struggled to make it past the second story

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I'd recommend the book but not this audiobook

What other book might you compare Fifty Classic Ghost Stories to, and why?

any other "classic ghost story" books

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Cathy Dobson?

A mix of male and female readers. Generally someone who can actually read properly

Did Fifty Classic Ghost Stories inspire you to do anything?

get the book out of the library and read it myself

Any additional comments?

This is ruined by the narrator. My own fault as I should have played a sample. The reader has strange inflections which are very very irritating. I honestly haven't heard someone, presumably professional, read a book so poorly. I couldn't listen to it after a while. I kept hoping it would get better but didn't. A shame as i know some of the stories but couldnt get past the second story.

Terrible

This woman's voice is totally distracting making the book unlistenable. I made the mistake of purchasing two books read by her ...never again

Bought this in a rush without reading the reviews. Absolutely awful. I give up after less than 5 minutes.

dreadful narration.

Un-listenable narration ruining these stories. As try as I might to ignore it, I can't. The narrators inflection is all over the place, emphasis placed on the wrong words in the sentence - I've honestly never heard anything like it, and will consciously avoid anything like this in the future. it's so bad it makes me cross to even think about it.

Wish I Had Read Previous Reviews

Would you try another book written by the authors or narrated by Cathy Dobson?

Absolutely not narrated by Cathy Dobson

What could the authors have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Who would complain about EF Benson et al. The authors are iconic ghost story writers. It was purely the choice of the narrator.

What didn’t you like about Cathy Dobson’s performance?

Everything! Boring voice. Even 1 story narrated by her was too much, but there are hours of listening. Just couldn't stand it.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Stories are all classic, but the narrator did not have any redeeming qualities and being narrated by a computer generated voice would even have been better.
