Publisher's Summary

The Gallagher family has called Deeprath Castle home for 700 years. Nestled in the Wicklow Mountains of Ireland, the estate is now slated to become a public trust, and book lover and scholar Carragh Ryan is hired to take inventory of its historic library. But after meeting Aidan, the current Viscount Gallagher, and his enigmatic family, Carragh knows that her task will be more challenging than she'd thought.

Two decades before, Aidan's parents died violently at Deeprath. The case, which was never closed, has recently been taken up by a new detective determined to find the truth. The couple's unusual deaths harken back a century, when 23-year-old Lady Jenny Gallagher also died at Deeprath under mysterious circumstances, leaving behind an infant son and her husband, a renowned writer who never published again. These incidents only fueled fantastical theories about the Darkling Bride, a local legend of a sultry and dangerous woman from long ago whose wrath continues to haunt the castle.

The past catches up to the present, and odd clues in the house soon have Carragh wondering if there are unseen forces stalking the Gallagher family. As secrets emerge from the shadows and Carragh gets closer to answers - and to Aidan - could she be the Darkling Bride's next victim?

In Awe

This is probably one of my favorite audio books, right behind Susanna Kearsley's books. The mystery of it all wraps you up and holds on to the end. The narration was perfect, and depicted the atmosphere perfectly. When I went to bed last night, I stupidly set the 30 min. sleep mode. I got maybe 2 hours sleep because I continually reset that freaking timer. Highly Recommend!

Loved! Story, characters, ending! Great reader.

Hated to pause at the end of my travels and not sit in the car and listen all the way through.

Terrific book in the tradition of DuMaurier

What a happy discovery for me. I’d forgotten my youthful love of gothic romance until I began listening to The Darkling Bride. A castle, mysterious deaths, aristos, curious outsider, puzzles, red herrings. Well written and beautifully read. I tend to prefer meticulously researched historical romances set before the conveniences of telephones and automobiles but I’ve listened to so many I’m running out of authors to discover. I’m so happy I stepped out of my comfort zone.

Great plot! Didn’t want to be interrupted!

I loved this book! I listened over the Christmas holidays while vacationing in a campground with no cell service. I started listening towards the end of our trip and my husband kept wanting to have deep conversations about things like retirement and our savings and 401ks. I kept having to go back a few minutes to remember what had happened. It was very suspenseful without any gore. I love this type of dramatic book that won’t creep me out and keep me from sleeping at night! The narrator was good at drawing you into the story. I give this title an A+!

Truly boring

I do not know what all the fuss and hype is about this book But I listened and really could have cared less The characters were not compelling or interesting and it would have been more satisfying if the whole castle fell down with everyone in it at the time That, at least, would have been an interesting ending. The narrator is terrible - no Celtic accent - boring

So. slow.

This book has a lot going on yet at the same time, it's like nothing is going on. I don't know if I'd call it a suspenseful thriller by an means. I did like the multiple stories happening, I just wished more happened in them! Also, the narration is so slow. I enjoyed the narrators voice, I just wish she didn't speak at a snail's pace. It was painful. I had to speed up the audio for it to be tolerable.
