Story
No one knows why the district attorney is gunning for Susan Wilson, but Clint Wolf is determined to find out, even if it’ll get him in trouble. While he works to clear Susan’s name, his crusade is sidelined when a bar manager is murdered during an apparent armed robbery. The method of operation is eerily similar to those used by the ruthless gang who killed his family, and Clint might soon have to face down the demons from his past to solve the mystery.

Publisher's Summary
When a woman is found dead on her doorsteps—shot through the heart with an arrow—Clint Wolf and Susan Wilson go to work trying to track down the sadistic killer. On the very next day, a second victim is murdered in his driveway (killed in the same manner) and it's now a race against time to uncover the motive behind the killings and identify the murderer. What they know so far is that he's a skilled archer preying on human targets, and they have no clue where he'll strike next.
As though the case itself isn't complicated enough, the district attorney has launched a grand jury investigation into Susan's actions during a shooting that saved Clint's life. No one knows exactly why the DA is gunning for Susan, but one thing is crystal clear...it's personal.

Great second book!
After the events of book 1, Clint is settling in to life as the police chief. He is worried about Susan and the fact she has an upcoming indictment after what she did in the last book. But things take a turn for the worst when people start turning up dead after being shot with an arrow. All the victims have something in common and it's a race against time for Clint and his team to find the killer before they target one of them.
I really enjoyed book one, but definitely thought this one was better. Even though there were parts that annoyed me, it was still a solid 5 star read. It had more action and suspense!!
Clint has become a stronger character in this one. He knows he has to do the right thing, irregardless of who he will step on. The only thing that annoyed me so much in this one was the fact that he is with Chloe. She is all wrong for him, and honestly, she is quite annoying too!! I found their relationship to be hard to like.
As I said, there's a bit more action in this and Clint has a lot more on his plate, as well as what's happening with Susan, the current murders, there is also a very unwelcome blast from the past that could soon be paying him a visit! This one had more suspense too. It was hard to see who was the killer till near the end.
In all, a great read. I'm becoming invested in these characters and am looking forward to more from them.
J. Scott Bennett gave a flawless performance as always! He puts emotion behind his performance and always brings the story to life.

Is it okay to dislike Candace?
I love Clint Wolf! I love this series! I love the narration! I seriously do not like Candace, the love interest. She was annoying in the first book and now that she and Clint are together, well, this was too much Candace.
My dislike of Candace aside, this second book in the Clint Wolf series was WONDERFUL!! We get the pleasure of two mysteries with this listen and the ending for both just blew my mind! WHAT???!!!!!
I'm downloading book three now!!

Book 2 just as good
I really love this series and the narrator sounds just like I imagine Clint Wolf would sound if he was a real live person. This book did not disappoint. It has 2 things going on with it. First why is the DA gunning for Suzanne, and secondly an archery killer ! Think you know who the killer is? Guess again. I was surprised when I finally worked out whom it was. I love the small town aspect of these stories having grown up in the country so it really connects me further. A good author and a good narrator equals a cozy book to crawl into. Suzanne plays a bigger role in this story and it’s not what you think it is. That was a twist and a surprise for me. Gonna start book 3, yay I’m excited. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Oh, this is not a cozy mystery in that it’s fun to read; it’s real life realism. It’s got some violence that is very tolerable and a lot of mystery.

I LOVE THIS SERIES!!!!!
As with the first book, this one had me hooked from beginning to end. It's full of action, murder, mystery, suspense, twists and turns, keeping you on the edge of your seat to the very last word. I can't wait to find out what will happen in the next book!!
The narration is fabulous once again! J. Scott Bennett does an excellent job with the character voices and brings the story to life. Bourg and Bennett are one of my favorite story telling duos. Not Quite a Quiet Little Town
This book is a mystery coated in enigma-sauce wrapped in bacon and deep fried. Just when you rhink you have it figured out, your next bite turns everything on its sideand makes you wonder why you made the mistake of thinking you knew how it was gonna go. Also unlike some books, each new character adds another flavor to the story instead of being just colorful background or crowd-fodder.
This book, the second in the series reminds the reader to be careful what you wish for. Both planned and unplanned actons have consequences that can haunt you the next day, the next year, or the next decade. This book has all three and it seems to be especially true if there was a plan, but following it just wasn't enough. As I have heard before from this narrator, his voice can go from "Stone Killer" to "Why Me?" in an instant. Therefore both in switching characters and switching circumstances, he shines.
I did not read the first book in this series, now I'm going to have to. I have not read the third book in the series, the ending of the second book makes it a neccessity. This book is that gripping. I need more credits.

I didn't see that coming
I really enjoy listening to Mr. Bennett's voice and is the reason for picking this book. He has this voice that is just right for story telling that keeps my attention throughout the book.
My first story from Mr. Bourg and I enjoyed following Clint Wolf and his team in his investigation to find the archer who is killing people and almost kills one of their own. He also deals with the grief that plagues his nights. I like Susan a lot and I wish he would pick her instead of Chloe who comes across as an insecure nag I wanted to smack a few times LOL
Good crew of secondary characters. Well plotted and intense story, I could not figure out who the killer was and I couldn't believe who it was when revealed at the end.
The ending is not a cliffhanger, but it almost left me with that feeling the way it ended. I know it is just setting it up for the next book, but I am left wondering and curious why is the district attorney going after Susan.
I received this review copy audiobook at my request and this review is voluntary.

Clint Wolf right on target!
Another outstanding story with Chief Wolf, Chloe, Susan and all the rest in the sleepy little town where a lot of people die. Just as the author did in the first book, the characters are engaging and the story pulls you in. The plot twists are not overly cumbersome and it ends with a great set up for a third book. Can’t wait!

Keeps You Guessing
I received this audiobook in return for an honest review. I quite enjoyed the book. J Scott Bennett is a good narrator who I have listened to numerous times.
This book is obviously one of several in a series and I think that could be its only sticking point. The story ends on a cliffhanger, actually two cliffhangers in the overall book.
The plot of this book was interesting and well thought out, definitely kept you guessing until the very end. People are being killed by someone with a crossbow and arrows. Clint and his team have to find out who and why, and who might still be in danger, before the killer strikes again.
Interwoven throughout is several subplots, which is a cause for the cliffhangers. Clint is trying to move on with his life with a new girlfriend after his wife and daughter were murdered. One of his officers is being tried for use of excessive force; so both of those subplots are quite evident in the story.
I puzzled over some of the police procedurals used in the story ... the police themselves processing the crime scenes rather than having crime scene technicians process the scenes, but concluded that due to the fact that the story is set in a small town, can overlook that.
Overall, quite enjoyable, and definitely kept me guessing and listening to find out who was the killer.

Brilliant from start to finish! Mystery, suspense, intrigue and action; this series has them all and it keeps you guessing right till the end! Superbly well done!

I was given this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.

Superb second story in the Clint Wolf trilogy by author B.J.Bourg. After the killings of his wife and daughter, homicide detective Wolf had moved from the city to become Chief of police in a small rural town in Louisiana. Now, a couple of years later, he is established, well liked and respected by his colleagues and even had a new girlfriend, and a dog. But nightmares still haunted his sleep even though his family's killers were in jail awaiting trial. Also facing a possible indictment for killing the man who had a gun to Clint's head the previous year, was fellow police officer, Susan. Then a bizarre murder takes place in his town: a woman shot through the heart by an arrow. It was not to be the only such death ...
Well written with excellent characterisation, the characters come alive as they struggle with their personal demons whilst fully investigating the serial killings. All is meticulously charted as different possible suspects and motives are sorted and found wanting. A mystery to fully engrossed the reader as they, too, confront the various twists of the plot.
As in the first of the series, J.Scott Bennett reads to perfection, his pleasantly accented voice conjuring up the town and it's inhabitants, the pace matching the text and the meticulousness of the investigation, as well as further bringing to life each individual character. The expression, 'hand and glove' come to mind when thinking of story and narrator.
Although the second part of a trilogy, this book is entirely stand alone. Meet some interesting but very real people and enjoy an excellent quest for a serial killer which will keep the reader guessing to the tragic ending - highly recommended.
