A great slow burner

I have no complaints about this series so far. A lot of books I've listened to recently (including the red queen) have been so fast pace its slightly annoying because it just feels like so much is happening all at once in the world. This series slows that down and gives the listener time to understand and appreciate both the world and the characters. The pace also allows for more believable character development.

Riveting at every turn

As always, Victoria Aveyard weaves an epic tale of adventure. Thrilling and humorous, with a cast of diverse characters you just fall in love with. Book 2 of this story continues with the same skill as the first, can’t wait for the third!

3.5 Stars 🌟

This was the second book in a new series by an author that I have been a huge fan of. For some reason though, I didn't seem to be able to fall into this series in the way that I have in the past with her books. It may have been that there was a significant amount of time between the first and second books, but I really do not think that was it. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy the storyline. I just never had that feeling that I get where you couldn't NOT put the book down because you just had to find out what was going to happen.

This storyline continues on with the journey of the motley group that has been assembled to help
Corayne save the world from destruction. The bad guys - Queen Erida and her prince Taristan - are continuing on their rampage across the continent and are continuing to conquer other kingdoms and open other spindles in the process.

Corayne and her group are desperately trying to follow in their wake and close the newly opened spindles and stop the creatures emerging from these spindles - but they are falling behind. Erida is becoming an even worse "bad guy" and it is very easy to root for the underdogs in this scenario.

Corayne is still trying to find her footing in this new world and new scenario and her confidence is beginning to grow and take root. The group itself is becoming more cohesive and they seem to be getting stronger as a group, yet they are facing incredible odds and things are not looking good.

Again, this was an interesting storyline, yet for me it was missing something. What that something was, I honestly have no idea, but it did take me several weeks to finish this book. That is extremely odd for me as I usually finish a book either in the same day or within the next day or so. But, I will say that the ending - say the last 10% or so - definitely cranked up the tension and the drama. I did find myself on the edge of my seat as things unfurled and I was sad that it ended when it did.

Will I continue with this series? Yes, I think I will. I've already invested the time and effort for books one and two and I DO want to know how things are going to end. It's probably just me - or maybe just odd timing - so I want to try again with book 3 and hopefully find myself hooked again. Ms. Aveyard has built up quite a lot of credit with me so I am going to cash in on that now and finish this series.

Rough Voice Performance

The whispering to almost yelling that the voice performer did throughout the whole book was infuriating. It hurt my ears and took me out of the story constantly. It has taken me over a year to finish this book because of it.
I liked the story and progression quite a bit though. I would also really like it if there was a pdf or jpg of the maps that correspond with the book.

A wonderful and thrilling adventure

What a wonderful opportunity to follow the path and adventures of so beloved and well-developed characters in their quest to save Alward.
I really enjoyed the multiple POVs throughout the story and found particularly interesting to feel and see through Erida’a eyes.
As always, the performance by Natalie Naudus was incredible and helped the story become even greater.

I truly recommend this saga to epic fantasy lovers, who want to come across an amazing world-building and strong female characters.

I’m really looking forward to reading next book on this series, which has become one of my all-time favourites!

Wow

Even better than the first one. Plenty of action and suspense, plus on helluva cliffhanger.
