Publisher's Summary

Around the time Elizabeth Gilbert turned 30, she went through an early-onslaught midlife crisis. She had everything an educated, ambitious American woman was supposed to want: a husband, a house, a successful career. But instead of feeling happy and fulfilled, she was consumed with panic, grief, and confusion. She went through a divorce, a crushing depression, another failed love, and the eradication of everything she ever thought she was supposed to be.

To recover from all this, Gilbert took a radical step. In order to give herself the time and space to find out who she really was and what she really wanted, she got rid of her belongings, quit her job, and undertook a yearlong journey around the world, all alone. Eat, Pray, Love is the absorbing chronicle of that year. Her aim was to visit three places where she could examine one aspect of her own nature set against the backdrop of a culture that has traditionally done that one thing very well. In Rome, she studied the art of pleasure, learning to speak Italian and gaining the 23 happiest pounds of her life. India was for the art of devotion, and with the help of a native guru and a surprisingly wise cowboy from Texas, she embarked on four uninterrupted months of spiritual exploration. In Bali, she studied the art of balance between worldly enjoyment and divine transcendence. She became the pupil of an elderly medicine man and also fell in love the best way, unexpectedly.

An intensely articulate and moving memoir of self-discovery, Eat, Pray, Love is about what can happen when you claim responsibility for your own contentment and stop trying to live in imitation of society's ideals. It is certain to touch anyone who has ever woken up to the unrelenting need for change.

What the Critics Say

"Sustaining a chatty, conspiratorial tone, Gilbert fully engages readers in the year's cultural and emotional tapestry, conveying rapture with infectious brio, recalling anguish with touching candor, as she details her exotic tableau with history, anecdote and impression." (Publishers Weekly)

"Gilbert's sensuous and audacious spiritual odyssey is as deeply pleasurable as it is enlightening." (Booklist)

    "every independent women's bible"

This is my second time enjoying this book, the first time I read it, this time I listened to it. I loved it the first time, but loved it even more hearing it in the author's own spoken words. Liz is such an inspirational woman, I have so much respect for her and her journey.

"Not chick lit or a new definition of chick lit"

I despise what I understand to be chick lit but maybe I don't really get what it is supposed to encompass and I just can't consider this to be that. Perhaps it is due to the writer and main character and narrator of this book being a woman or because so many woman love this story (who else propels literature forward besides the overwhelmingly female majority of readers?) Or because of that awful film rendition of this story which barely illustrated the story, which by the way, I do still watch occasionally mostly because I am trying to squeeze out more from this book. In all there are fascinating observations or culture and destinations, the best points of travel, love and self loathing and despair and yoga and food and healing and hope. Who doesn't crave this? Especially in such a fine delivery with as much lightness as solemness and with the wisdom of finding amusement in one's own desperate attempt at life. Also I could (and have) listen to her voice all day.

    "Interesting"

The author is an amazing narrator. I also really like the way she writes, as for the subject matter? It depends on what you are looking for. A lot of people's comments on here say that she is being selfish, spending the entire book talking about herself. You bought an woman's memoir of her personal mental and emotional journey while traveling... what did you expect? As for me, I liked it. I'm not very religious and have never visited India or Indonesia or tried meditation, yet it was still interesting to read about this other world.

    "Interesting"

I chose this book to "see what all the fuss was about." The story is interesting. She writes well. Her journey is interesting. what she learned and the lessons she shares are not novel in my universe, but if they open doors for other readers to explore, That's great.
