Publisher's summary

Blockbuster author Lisa Scottoline returns to the Rosato & Associates law firm with Betrayed, and maverick lawyer Judy Carrier takes the lead in a case that's more personal than ever.

Judy has always championed the underdog, so when Iris, the housekeeper and best friend of Judy's beloved Aunt Barb, is found dead of an apparent heart attack, Judy begins to suspect foul play. The circumstances of the death leave Judy with more questions than answers, and never before has murder struck so close to home.

In the meantime, Judy's own life roils with emotional and professional upheaval. She doesn't play well with her boss, Bennie Rosato, which jeopardizes her making partner at the firm. Not only that, her best friend Mary DiNunzio is planning a wedding, leaving Judy feeling left behind, as well as newly unhappy in her relationship with her live-in boyfriend Frank.

Judy sets her own drama aside and begins an investigation of Iris's murder, then discovers a shocking truth that confounds her expectations and leads her in a completely different direction. She finds herself plunged into a shadowy world of people who are so desperate that they cannot go to the police, and where others are so ruthless that they prey on vulnerability. Judy finds strength within herself to try to get justice for Iris and her aunt -- but it comes at a terrible price.

Another book in a great series ruined by narration

I have listened to every one of Lisa Scottoline's Rosato and Associates books in the series. I always purchase Audible versions of Scottoline's books because the narration by Barbara Rosenblatt has been outstanding and pure enjoyment. Maria Bello is simply awful as a narrator. Some words are almost mumbled, others over-enunciated to the point of annoyance, terrible attempts at Spanish accent, common words mis-pronounced, poor pacing of narration ... you name the potential problem with a narrator and it has been exemplified in this book. If Maria Bello is reading the next one, I'll be buying the book and reading instead of listening.

JUDY CARRIER IS IN THE HOT SEAT

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. It's an excellent story of a young, hardworking attorney who doesn't make partner and dumps her boyfriend in a short time. She then learns that her favorite aunt is fighting cancer and the aunt's companion died under strange circumstances. It's Judy's turn to stand up and take charge of her life and the situations around her.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

It did moving back and forth between Judy's professional and personal lives until they meshed.

What does Maria Bello bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She brings the character of Judy to life.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There were times it made me sad and angry, but overall of good read.

Nails on a chalkboard

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The narrator. I am sure she is a lovely woman. Her voice is clear... but the narration was terrible. I struggled to listen to her voice. I purchased the second book and realized the narration of the first book was part of the enjoyment.

Would you be willing to try another book from Lisa Scottoline? Why or why not?

I would, but I honestly can't handle the current narrator... so I guess it depends on that.

How could the performance have been better?

narrator's voice is like nails on a chalkboard.

WONDERFUL

As always Lisa Scottoline came out forward. There has never been a disappointment with any of her books.

Pretty Good Twists

I loved this story and don't want to spoil it. Suffice it to say I listened to this rather than getting my work done!

A page turner that touched my heart.

Have you listened to any of Maria Bello’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I don't think so but she is a good story teller.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Not really extreme.

Great story! Extremely poor narration!

Lisa Scottoline is one of my favorite writers. Ever since I read Killer Smile I've been hooked.

I've listened to a few of her books on audible and have enjoyed them. The narration of this book made it difficult to get through. Parts were read like a kid just learning to read, while many parts were hard to distinguish who was speaking. Her voice rarely changed it's inflection, even between men and women. I was very disappointed.

No action, poor narrator

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

No. Not one of Lisa's best efforts. I'm forcing myself to finish the book but if I'd gotten it from the library, I'd be on my way to return it instead.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Not sure I'll get there. There's nothing really going on and I'm halfway done.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Too choppy, just not good.

Was Betrayed worth the listening time?

no

Hate the narrator

The narrator was very stilted and worked too hard to have clear pronunciation. She put the accent in sentences in the wrong places. She was the worst I've ever listened to.
