Publisher's Summary

To Philadelphia lawyer Grace Rossi, who's starting over after a divorce, a part-time job with a federal appeals court sounds perfect. But Grace doesn't count on being assigned to an explosive death penalty appeal. Nor does she expect ardor in the court in the form of an affair with her boss, Chief Judge Armen Gregorian. Then the truly unimaginable happens and Grace finds herself investigating a murder.

As Grace searches for the truth, she unearths a six-figure bank account kept by the judge with an alias; breaks into another judge's chambers; and follows a trail of bribery and judicial corruption that's stumped even the FBI. In no time at all, Grace under fire takes on a whole new meaning.

Critic Reviews

"Scottoline, an Edgar nominee for her first book, Everywhere That Mary Went, has again pulled together an intriguing cast of characters and a smart mystery to make an exciting, action-packed read." (Publishers Weekly)

Not typical Scottoline

I've enjoyed all of Lisa Scottoline's books--until now... I slogged through and managed to listen to the whole thing, but didn't enjoy it very much. I can't recommend it.

Poor ending

I thought the whole book was entertaining and captured the thriller aspect of advertised genre. But once the climax of the book was finished the whole book just ended. It was kind of like reading a letter with no or little closing.

Good little story

I like Lisa Scottolines books a lot; just found them . I like the characters in this book a lot and would like to read about them more; I had a really hard time with the cadence of the narrator; the reading was clear but so rushed it made me anxious at times

Very entertaining, fast pacef

Rapidly becoming one of my favorite authors. Twisting plot keeps you guessing. Highly recommended. If you like strong female characters you'll love Rossi.

Hard to follow...

Disappointing after "Everywhere that Mary Went" which was awesome. This was confusing and overdone... Needs a big edit. Writers comments at the end are very nice.
