Publisher's summary

I was born a heresy.

A girl with a man’s magic in a city divided by gender, with monks facing off against witches. I trained with the monks only under my father’s protection, head of the monastery. Rose to the top, despite everything set against me.

Until he died. A suicide, they called it. Yeah, right.

They killed him for his heresy. For me.

My only hope to survive now is to find his killers before they come for me. To expose their lies as the real blasphemy.

Because I might have been born a heresy. But I will live to be a heroine.

Her father's death unlocks a ton of secrets

Received as an audio review copy from Story, this is an honest review. Narrated beautifully by the author Levi Jacobs, brings to life this poignant and intense epic fantasy adventure. Aletheia Vjolla is a bizarre rarity among the male monk students training at a well revered temple; being a girl blessed with elemental magic though to be only something a man could wield, Aletheia endures continual chaos and abuse by the teachers and fellow students to prove she deserves a place at the temple. Her father's odd death puts her life in further danger and forces Aletheia to flee to the streets, dodging OverSeers and blood witches. Protected and befriended by a thief that teaches Aletheia what it takes to survive as she works to find the clues within peoples memories to finally unravel those behind her father's murder. The truth as Aletheia discovers comes with a tragic sacrifice that will leave echoes on her future. Highly recommended.

Flooding

I wasn’t sure about this book for almost all of it. Never really got hooked but it got me in the last few chapters so I went from no interest in the second book to adding it to my library.

Stopped at chapter 18

The story has some good bones, but the pacing lacks stakes and urgency. The female protagonist connects with a witch drop-out, and they become lovers. Not the kind of story that interests me.
