Publisher's Summary

This Jamaican-inspired fantasy debut about two enemy witches who must enter into a deadly alliance to take down a common enemy has the twisted cat-and-mouse of Killing Eve with the richly imagined fantasy world of Furyborn and Ember in the Ashes.

Divided by their order. United by their vengeance.

Iraya has spent her life in a cell, but every day brings her closer to freedom - and vengeance.

Jazmyne is the queen’s daughter, but unlike her sister before her, she has no intention of dying to strengthen her mother’s power.

Sworn enemies, these two witches enter a precarious alliance to take down a mutual threat. But power is intoxicating, revenge is a bloody pursuit, and nothing is certain - except the lengths they will go to win this game.

"A thundering waterfall of magic, vengeance and intrigue." (Samantha Shannon, New York Times & Sunday Times best-selling author of The Priory of the Orange Tree and The Bone Season)

Cant wait for book two

It was such a pleasure not to have to suffer through a non Jamaican narrator trying to fake a Jamaican accent.

I hope more publishers continue this trend of having narrators who match the book.

The first few chapters set up the world of Aiyca and the war behind the current events and sets up Iraya and Jazmyne’s motives. After chapter ten, the real fun begins. We know everyone. All the pieces are on the board and we get to buckle up for a good ride.

Great first debut by Ms. Smart and I can’t wait to read book two.

expected more magic

when you name a book witches steeped in gold you start reading expecting it to be based at least around witches and magic. this was more a worrior based story about a royal family.
the narration was so so most characters just sounded the same and hard to know who they were at that moment.
ok no I'm not saying its a bad read.
story was good after I got passed my disappointment of the not really witchy part lol.
I do think young adults would like this and its worth a go.

Well Written, but Not Especially Groundbreaking.

I had trouble connecting with the characters beyond their basic tropes. This story was well written and well narrated, but nothing really make me take notice. I kind of faded in and out of focus and even had to restart. Still, I wouldn't call it *bad*. It's worth at least 3 stars, plus one for the sake of the voice acting.

Intriguing

As I am writing this review I realize I spent the whole listening to this book . Once I started around lunchtime I couldn’t put it down, now it’s after midnight. Really enjoyed it.

Excellent narration and truly interesting magic.

I loved listening to such a new, captivating, story that introduces a new type of magic. The narrator does a superb job of telling the story.

Good Story

Some of the pronunciation wasn't correct and was throwing me off. It bothered me that the words weren't be pronounced correctly other than that the book was good.

Amazing!!!

I love the overall story and the characters, although Jasmine makes me a little angry. If you love magic, witches, and slow burn romances this is the book for you.
