Publisher's summary

Ericka Gilmore dabbles in life and death when she tries to conjure a ghost lover. But when Joe Reeves appears on her doorstep in the midst of a storm, she has to rethink her destiny.

A car accident left the former cop with the ability to foresee death. No longer willing to watch people he cares about die, Joe goes in search of a shaman to remove his "gift". His remedy until then is to avoid all relationships. But like a lightning strike, he experiences a strong connection with Ericka. A nearby mystical ley line could be Joe's solution if he and Ericka combine their gifts. But her secret past and his fear of seeing her death keep them at odds.

Something Different

This is a different romance. The main characters think they need to be alone when the Universe knows it to be the opposite. I enjoyed listening to this book. My only complaint is how often Erika waffles with her feelings for Joe. Overall they do get their HEA and the crazy adventure the MCs have to get there really makes this an entertaining listen. The narration is done well. I appreciated the way Eric J. McAnallen brought the story to life and enhanced the listening experience.

Interesting mix of romance and the supernatural...

Mystic Love is an interesting mix of romance and supernatural elements. Joe is a former cop whose life changed completely when he and his partner were in an accident, and, after recovering from a coma, he starts having visions of people dying. He feels driven to find the people of his visions to try to save them, and he is devastated when he can't always do so. He decides to buy a motorcycle and travel the country looking for someone with mystical powers to cure his precognition. While driving in a snow storm towards a well-respected shaman, Joe's bike breaks down, and he is forced to knock on the nearest door, which just happens to belong to Ericka. Earlier that evening, Ericka had been working on a magic spell to conjure an imaginary lover of her dreams. Due to a long family history of never finding a lasting love, Ericka believes she is cursed to live alone. Mistaking Joe for her spiritual lover, she still offers him a place to stay after realizing he is a plain old human man. Thus begins the journey of these two emotionally and spiritually damaged people learning to trust themselves and each other. The story has quite a few supernatural elements, including ghosts, visions and witchcraft, but there is also plenty of drama, action and romance for those readers not fond of such story lines. My only complaint is that I wanted Ericka to be less wishy washy about her feelings towards Joe. In the end, Joe and Ericka each make some startling and life altering revelations that lead to a happy ending for both.

Eric J McAnallen is a talented narrator. Other than a couple minor pronunciation errors, his delivery was smooth and flawless. He didn't differentiate overly between characters, but I never had any difficulty following the story. I would definitely listen to another audiobooks written by Keller and/or read by McAnallen.

I received a copy of this audiobooks at my request in exchange for this honest review.

sweet

I thought this was OK, sweet even, but still not a huge winner for me. The reason is that, as satisfying as seeing two likeable characters fall in love is, I can't help but notice that they both find and accept their destiny. His is to accept his premonitions of death and serve fate by saving lives; her's is to become his wife. The two are presented as equal. So, he gets a whole active destiny and she gets to...what, not become an old maid. We could be generous and say 'support him.' But that's still only a supporting role, which is so often the crumb women are offered and told it's a whole piece of toast. Now, I'm well aware that our culture preaches that becoming a wife is a goal in itself, but I hate when it's a woman's only goal, especially one who is otherwise smart and accomplished, as the heroine here is.

You know, there's another complaint I've made dozens and dozens of times in my reviews. it's when authors don't label parts of a series as such. This book is the sequel to The Ghost Inside (as far as I can tell)  and it's not labeled as such anywhere that I've yet to see. And it matters, because despite not being labeled, I so felt the lack of history that I went and read the blurbs of all the author's books until I found the one that comes before this book, 100% certain there would be one. So, obviously I felt the lack of a first book. It is readable alone, but you will know there is a book before it. I sure did.

All in all, not a bad book. The writing is perfectly readable and the narrator did a fine job. But not a winner for me personally. It did get me through a whole day of stripping wallpaper though, so there is that to appreciate.

Note: I received a free audible code for this book. But I chose to read and review it.

Interesting

I got this ARC via audiobook boom and this is my voluntary review. This story was interesting in that the H/h were both searching for aloneness when they really were searching for the one who completes them. The way they got to that point was a set of twists and turns that kept me listening until the end.

Great Twists!

JJ Keller wrote some great twists in Mystic Love. I was attracted to the book from its blurb. Ericka and Joe are couple featured in this story. Both are wanting to be alone, yet attracted to each other. This is the second book by the author that I have listened to, and I love how the ending is not to be expected. Eric J McAnallen is a new to me narrator, and I think he added to my enjoyment. I requested this review copy audiobook and have voluntarily written this review.
