Publisher's summary

Kali's kingdom is imprisoned - and she may hold the key.

In one breathless moment, royal scout Kali's world has turned on its head. Bishop Bahir has deposed the king and seized the palace - with Kali's sister trapped inside. Now on the run, Kali, Trace, and the future king of Dansil have only one place to go for help: Everett, an enemy kingdom of which Trace is the presumed dead heir.

As Trace reclaims his identity - one that may leave no room for a Dansil spy - Kali faces her own growing magic, which may be their only hope of stopping Bahir.

With shattering secrets, daunting new powers, and uncertain allegiances, Kali must walk a deadly tightrope to protect her kingdom - and her heart.

Unraveling Darkness by best-selling author Alex Lidell is the final novel in the Scout series. Perfect for fans of Tamora Pierce, Leigh Bardugo, and Sarah J. Maas.

Overall

Now that I have read the conclusion I and can see how all things have come together, I find that this story was not as uninteresting as I found it to be in the first book. I was pleasantly surprised. Although I am still not a fan of political intrigue, Alex's writing is so good it makes me see through the things that annoy me with these types of stories.

As I said in my review of the first book, it is a good story, just not my cup of tea although I did enjoy it. Also, I admit that it took a minute for this narrator to grow on me but I found that she kept her pace and her narration while conveying the actions and feelings of the characters was quite good. Overall, this was a good read.

I was given this book by request for my honest and unbiased review.

Great ending to a short series

I really loved the first book in this series, and raced as fast as I could into the next after that last cliffhanger ending. This one picks up right where that left off, and the status quo changes pretty quickly. And...unfortunately, keeps changing pretty quickly. While I loved the story, loved the characters, and loved the unfolding world, the story felt really rushed to me. I'd just want to settle into a character moment and dig deeper, follow the emotional threads spinning out, but then the story would quickly move on.

For all that, I still loved this book. The complexities of the world and the characters paid out well in the final climax, and I really liked the ending. (And would have LOVED a whole book just unraveling a particular relationship quirk at the end.) But, it was a solid ending, and nicely wrapped it all up.

Narration was solid again, too--Hayden Daviau did a great job.

I'd definitely recommend this to fans of adventure fantasy who want to go beyond the usual YA trope norms. Fun and deep without going too gritty. I wish this had been a trilogy, but, hey. I'm really glad to have read it!

Great book

Kali's adventures pick up right where the last book left off. In this one we get to see her dealing with even more, and different, challenges and trying to figure out where exactly she fits in the world. The book is very well written and the characters are wonderful.
