You can't change your fate - so throw yourself into battle, because you'll either win or wake up drinking mead in the halls of your ancestors. That's what Finn's tribe believe. But when their settlement is massacred by a hostile tribe and Finn and several friends, companions, and rivals make their escape across a brutal, unfamiliar landscape, Finn will fight harder than he's ever fought in his life. He wants to live - even if he lives only long enough to tell Thyri Treelegs how he feels about her.

Story
For centuries, the Vikings have swept out of the Norse countries and fallen on whatever lands they could reach aboard their longships, and few could resist the power of their violent onslaught. They came at first to plunder and then to settle, an encroachment fiercely resisted wherever they went. Such was the case in the southern lands of Ireland. En route to the Viking longphort there, known as Dubh-linn, Thorgrim Night Wolf and Ornolf the Restless stumble across an Irish ship.

Now, power-hungry jarls carve out petty kingdoms, and monsters stalk the shadow-haunted woods and mountains. A world where the bones of the dead gods still hold great power, promising fame, and fortune for those brave - or desperate - enough to seek them out. It has been 20 years since the end of the war. The dictatorial Augurs, once thought of almost as gods, were overthrown and wiped out during the conflict, their much-feared powers mysteriously failing them. Those who had ruled under them, men and women with a lesser ability known as the Gift, avoided the Augurs' fate only by submitting themselves to the rebellion's Four Tenets.

Any additional comments?
If you like Joe Ambercrombie style work - great characters, rough and raw, bad language, but always great twists with a very good narrator - you'll like this book. :-)

Gritty, Cannibalism included
This story is set in Roman times and is full of action and war. There is good character development and slow parts in the story are few in between. The narrator Sean Barrett was the main factor in my continuing this story, although I found it a bit too disturbing to be able to finish the book.

Fantastic!!
I was so upset that I've read every one of Bernard Cornwells books pre 10ad & that is my biggest interest cutoff time period. This work is fictional but woven together beautifully to shed light on the mysterious British Iron Age. Fantastic read & onto book 2. Well written & it captures all the essence & passion of the time periods when everyone seemed to be so much more than they are now

great fast paced story
the audio performance is excellent and the story is excellent. whenever you feel like there is a full moment there is a new challenge to take on.
the heros in the book are distinct and I felt myself cheering for the success

Simply amazing.
Mr. Watson has left me utterly speechless. This book is an absolute hidden gem and Mr. Watson is now one of my favorite authors. Right alongside with Bernard Cronwell. This was a true joy to listen to.
