Story
What happens when you learn to communicate better with everyone? No doubt you’ve had to endure a painfully awkward conversation, more than once in your life. Maybe it was a stranger, a colleague, or a date. Maybe it was a group discussion. You found yourself breaking a sweat, not knowing what to say. The more time passed, the more tense you became. You thought about all the communication books you’ve read in your life and wished you had them with you…to knock yourself unconscious as a way out of the conversation. The best thing about the whole situation was the moment it ended.

Elton John? & Great book
When he was talking about the effects of listening to Mozart, the bit about Mozart seemed to conclude and then the words “Elton John” were spoken as it that was the title of a new section. After that, the book continued without any further information or mention of Elton John.
I loved this book and read it because I have IBS-C. My colon doesn’t move! After 5 minutes breathing for the last 4 nights, my colon has done its job 4 days in a row (inconceivable!!!) I will do more exercises but I definitely think this is a fruitful path for me. Thank you for writing this book!

Boring!!!
Read like someone cut and pasted info from Wikipedia on the physiology and pathology of every organ in the body. It dragged on and on, with nothing practical offered until the last two, very short chapters. My conclusion: this was an infomercial for this doctor. Oh yeah.... this functional “medical” doctor is actually a chiropractor. Don’t waste your time on this. Read ( or listen to) the experts: Stephen Porges, Deb Dana, Peter Levine, Stanley Rosenberg, Kathy Kain.

"Put the Pieces Together for Me"
This book helped synthesize a bigger picture for me as to why things like cryo/cold-therapy, breathing exercises, music, laughter, yoga/Pilates, etc are said to be important for improving HRV and thus long term health, but I didn't understand how or why about the whole Sympathetic/Para-sympathetic nervous system works...the author does that in Ch.15.

Much to Think About
I have learned a lot about the way my body works from listening to this book. The narrator’s calm voice helped me get through parts that my brain had a hard time hearing. I have much to think about now, and considering where I am health wise, that is very good. For example, I’d had enough if people and books saying “meditate”. What I needed to know was specifically what meditation did physically for my body, not my mind or my attitude. I feel like I have a better understanding of that having listened to this book. And I am glad to say that meditation was only one of the exercises I learned about from Activate Your Vagus Nerve.
Oh, one more thing: I am also glad to report that this was not the kind of book that is basically a long sales pitch for something else the author is selling. When I’m ready, if I choose to do it, I learned plenty of exercises and changes I can make to improve my health that won’t cost me a bundle of money. Support from others is talked about as one arrow in the quiver, and supplements are another arrow, but they are not at all the only arrows. I appreciate that.

I’m not sure on the quality of the science
There is an overall overview of human biomechanics which takes up most of the book with only a short chapter at the end with any sort of advice. I’m not 100% sure that everything in that overview is accurate, there are some very general conclusions about some aspects of the workings of the body. Don’t use this book as an introduction to medicine, I would say. There is a tendency to bring EVERYTHING back to the vagus nerve when that may not be the case. There are many things that can impact heart rate variability and the length of time it takes to process food. State of thyroid function for example. Overall advice such as exposure to cold are not a cure all for everybody, especially people with an already stressed nervous system. And ‘make sure you tai chi analyse your space’? Really...

Hugely informative and genuine self help book
I listened to this book via audio and couldn’t wait to listen to the next part. Few people know about the vagus nerve and it’s huge impact on the our overall health, including medical professionals it would seem. Dr Habib gives the best explanation of vasovagal syncope I’ve heard and provides many light bulb moments as your understanding of the functions of the vagus nerve develops. I’ll be listening again and taking many notes as well as making the vagus nerve a theme within my Yoga classes. Thank you DrHabib.

The Future of Medicine - Vegas Nerve Health
A study into a greatly unknown and critical part of modern healthcare. The Vegas Nerve along with Nutrition and Movement are the key to frighting a majority of misunderstood illnesses, resulting in misdiagnosis, drug treatments, lifelong battles and ending in serious illness and death caused by a lack of education into the actual cause of a simple issue caused by modern lifestyles and habit of visiting the doctor to get prescription drugs.
Having personally been affected by a damaged Vegas Nerve, I've had the lot, hyperthyroidism, high blood pressure, depression, pains in bones, weakness, high heart rate, stress, anxiety, gut problems. The VN is the route cause of this after it was affected by a past trauma. My years of study have brought me to understand the profound effects that caring, repairing and taking a different approach to life, health and lifestyle is the key to recovery. Mindfulness is an exceptional part of VN control.
If there are two things in life you should understand. One is to learn how to live life working for what you love and make money along the way and the other is how caring for your VN, Nutrition and Movement are the keys to a healthy long and prosperous life.
Great book and I look forward to hearing further studies on engagement, activation and repair of individual aspects of the body. Presently the high blood pressure is a sticky area where I'm looking at working with VN neurological activation by a specialist in VN pathways and tapping to reactivate communication. It's not covered by is a treatment taking the world by storm. Suggest this could be a P2 to this book.

not at all what I was expecting or wanted
struggled through the book, so much information about the nerve and not much more about how to help yourself.

Story
Emotions, affect regulation, and interpersonal social behavior are psychological processes that define how people react to events, environmental difficulties, and other people. These processes build our sense of self, help us form connections, and influence whether we feel comfortable in different situations or with different individuals. Despite the fact that these processes may be witnessed scientifically and subjectively, they constitute a complex interplay between our psychological experience and physiological control.
