Love Gaiman but little new material

Let me start by saying that Neil Gaiman is one of my three favorite authors, along with Tolkien and Pratchett. I always purchase his audio books because his narration brings each story to life.

My low overall rating reflects only my disappointment when discovering that these short stories and book excerpts are almost all contained in Gaiman's previously published collections - which I already own.

This would be a wonderful bargain for a new Gaiman fan, but would warn long-time readers and listeners who have large Gaiman libraries to check the contents before purchasing. I was so excited about a new Gaiman book that I pre-ordered it based on the author's name alone.

So many good stories!

Found my new favorite author, his dark tone in many and the many twists had me fascinated that I'd never read/heard his stuff before. But now I can read/listen to all of it!

Great narration, and time flies with this book

Sheer delight!

Absolutely delightful start to finish. Not only was it a treat hearing some of his short stories for the first time, it was wonderful to hear old favorites red by the author. And, Neil is not only a pleasure to listen to, but also adds color to the telling. Well worth the money and time.

When you can’t get enough Neil Gaiman...

I love this author and his books. I’m not a huge fan of short stories, so this was still a small risk. But it was pure delight.

52 Bits of Awesome

I’m a sucker for a 2-for-1 deal, so when this collection popped up in an Audible sale, I snatched it up. It’s a huge collection, mostly of shortish stories organized in order of their publishing. As you read the stories you can see Gaiman’s style evolve through time. There are 52 separate pieces written in many styles- rewrites of fairy tales, horror stories, a Sherlock Holmes story, ghost stories, excerpts, and mini-sequels for American Gods and Neverwhere so you can catch up with Shadow and The Marquis de Carabas. Some of the stories are fun, some are adventurous, all of them are written in Gaiman’s silky smooth style. As a huge bonus, this Audible collection is read by Gaiman, who is a gifted narrator.

I recommend this collection for its amazing value, depth, and range.

Mostly I loved it

Listening to Neil Gamin read a story is a delightfully intimate experience. There is just something about his style that makes me lean in and drink up every word. Most of the stories in the Reader were really good. There was an occasional clunker that I would end up skipping and I wondered who would ever have voted that story into the book, but for the most part I enjoyed this big long book all the way through.

My favorite author done well!

I’ll admit I love Neil Gaiman - so witty, so imaginative, such a fine writer. It turns out he narrates beautifully as well. These stories are glorious what if’s. What if the old gods still lived but struggled with mundane things? What if your invented girlfriend existed?
