Publisher's summary

A bloody war has ended in restored peace. The shield of Martian magic guards the stars...two centuries of spell and steel to ward all humanity.

Two years ago, Lieutenant Commander Roslyn Chambers stood witness to the surrender of the last remnants of the Republic. Fueled by atrocity against Mage and mundane alike, the secessionists who waged war against the Protectorate of Mars are finally defeated. Now, a special commission from the Mage-Queen of Mars takes Roslyn deep into the former Republic to hunt the architects of that atrocity. Mages who betrayed their own, the creators of Project Prometheus must be brought to justice. But hidden from even the Republic, Prometheus has woven magic and technology together once more. Here, hidden from all prying eyes, they have created a monster...one that even a Protectorate forged by the spell must call black magic.

better then the other reviews give credit

there there 2 other reviews at the time I post this and they where less then great. This book was good it is book 10+ in this universe. The book needed a lot to get possible new people up to speed I was bummed that it jumped so far so quick In the beginning but Montgomery is kinda stuck for 3 years on Mars so it makes sense that we get another powerful main character. I dont recommend this as the first book in the universe but it was another good addition to it.

Really intense

Narrator is great as usual. Story kept me on the edge of my seat and was borderline too intense. I enjoyed Rosalyn's development into a formidable officer and how her power limits were portrayed.

Rosalind Rises

It is good to see Rosalind continue to rise and perform beyond the expectations of her family. This book really sets up the next ones to be written and allows for a transition from the original main characters to new ones. This is a great listen.

Incredible as always!

Once again Glynn Stewart didn't disappoint with the last installment of the Starship Mage series. Awesome characters, incredible story!

Good addition to Starship's Mage series, but.....

I really enjoy this whole series. This book isn't far off from the others, but with a severe lack of page space for the main character (Prince Regent - First Hand- Damien Montgomery), this book felt very lacking as compared to the rest of this series. I understand authors want to develop other characters from their books and give them new life and meaning, but I typically am not a fan of basically a stand alone offshoot that doesn't really progress the main story. This does progress the main story, and is well written, thus 4 stars and not 5. I don't mind Mage Lt. Commander (and now Commander) Chambers being the herione and main character, but she is not my favorite by a long shot. The story revolves around her, and her ability to investigate and contain a situation. As with Damien, she is able to do amazing magic, but unlike Damien her not being a rune wright hampers her.

The book is definitely worth a read/listen if you have enjoyed the others in the series. The last 5 minutes give more clarity on the overall story then the rest of the listen combined.

Kafer is an outstanding narrator.

Glynn Stewart is an outstanding author and worthy of being the next Arthur C Clarke.

Great Addition! Keep Going!

I enjoy this author and this series. The progression was great.

my complaint was how this storyline compares to somewhat recent events and I wished the storyline had more truth to it then actual events. it is a great story regardless.

Sadly, Disappointed

I felt that this book did not meet my expectations, no where near the original series, and the story development was chaotic and cumbersome.

Meh.

I like the character of Chambers in this series, and while it's nice to see her taking the lead for an entire book, the book wasn't particularly good. My usual complaint about this series is how slow the overall arc is moving, usually relegated to little except the last chapter, where the players in the overall arc are revealed, and this book is not an exception. But more than that, this story was pretty much a rehash of an often used, tired out main story line about which I can not say more without spoilers.

Meh

I hope this isn’t a spoiler but this book is about a supervillain with space zombies.

When villains show up they are extremely evil for effectively no reason, and are then killed easily. I think the author just wanted to write about space zombies. Other than that this book is just filler.
