Story
Twenty-six-year-old Beatrice Hyde-Clare is far too shy to investigate the suspicious death of a fellow guest in the Lake District. A spinster who lives on the sufferance of her relatives, she would certainly not presume to search the rooms of her host's son and his friend looking for evidence. Reared in the twin virtues of deference and docility, she would absolutely never think to question the imperious Duke of Kesgrave about anything, let alone how he chose to represent the incident to the local constable. And yet that's exactly what she does.

Publisher's summary
Veronica Speedwell returns in another adventure filled with secrets and betrayal from Deanna Raybourn, the New York Times best-selling author of the Lady Julia Grey Mysteries.
Victorian adventuress Veronica Speedwell is whisked off to a remote island off the tip of Cornwall when her natural historian colleague Stoker's brother calls in a favor. On the pretext of wanting a companion to accompany him to Lord Malcolm Romilly's house party, Tiberius persuades Veronica to pose as his fiancée - much to Stoker's chagrin. But upon arriving, it becomes clear that the party is not as innocent as it had seemed. Every invited guest has a connection to Romilly's wife, Rosamund, who disappeared on her wedding day three years ago, and a dramatic dinner proves she is very much on her husband's mind.
As spectral figures, ghostly music, and mysterious threats begin to plague the partygoers, Veronica enlists Stoker's help to discover the host's true motivations. And as they investigate, it becomes clear that there are numerous mysteries surrounding the Romilly estate, and every person present has a motive to kill Rosamund....

Deanna Raybourn Has Done It Again!
Deanna Raybourn's 4th book in her Veronica Speedwell series was a pleasure from beginning to end. She loves to change up the settings and this time it was a castle on an island in Cornwall, which was really a character itself.
I have said it before and I will say it again: There are few authors who can write dialogue as well as Deanna Raybourn. The banter between Veronica and Stoker is so fun to listen to and read. In general, I missed them and was so happy when A Dangerous Collaboration was finally released!
I enjoyed the mystery and the characters, I was happy that Stoker's brother played a larger role in this book, as he pops in and out of the other books but he's a main player here.
I always get the audiobooks because the reader, Angele Masters is superb! Hands down my favorite reader. I have listened to books simply because she was the reader and have never been disapointed.
Get this book, you won't regret it! And if you haven't read/listened to any other of Deanna Raybourn's books, you really should!

Just loved it
Veronica and Stoker are hilarious and charming. The mystery is really secondary to their interactions. Love this series and can't wait for the next one. :-)

Already I am anxiously awaiting the next book...
I am already awaiting the next book in this series. Veronica and Stoker have quickly become my favorite cozy couple/non-couple and Deanna Raybourn and Angele Masters one of my favorite author/narrator pairings. These ladies are like a gourmet meal and a fine vintage when paired together. Brava Ms. Raybourn on keeping the simmer alive as well as everyone intrigued with your latest period piece. I love the further development of Tiberius and the groundwork that I assume is being laid for the next book with the hints of the White Chapel murders...could it be the work of one Tiberius Templeton Vain?! Keep them coming, we are all hooked!

A good series if a bit soppy. not as good as her royal spyness but still worth the listen. remember to listen in order

Gets better as it goes
Stoker and Veronica are marvelous!! Their witty Denny banter is why I am here and another great mystery! Smart, witty, wonderful!

Magnificent Adventure
As an avid reader and lover of Deanna Raybourn’s books, I cannot be more pleased with this book. My favorite so far but in fairness I have loved them all. Angele Masters is perfect as the narrator! Mystery, intrigue and a promise of romance, Thank you!!!! I am on to the next the series!

Worst pick for a reade I have yet to hear
The performance is completed off for this series. I preordered this book and was looking forward to another fine listen. My disappointment was immediate. The performance in no way fit the characters Ms Raybourn has developed in her earlier installments.
