Have you ever wondered "Why did I do that?" or "Why can't I just control my behavior?" Others may judge our reactions and think, "What's wrong with that person?" When questioning our emotions, it's easy to place the blame on ourselves; holding ourselves and those around us to an impossible standard. It's time we started asking a different question. Through deeply personal conversations, Oprah Winfrey and renowned brain and trauma expert Dr. Bruce Perry offer a groundbreaking and profound shift from asking “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?”

Onward tackles the problem of educator stress, and provides a practical framework for taking the burnout out of teaching. Stress is part of the job, but when 70 percent of teachers quit within their first five years because the stress is making them physically and mentally ill, things have gone too far. Unsurprisingly, these effects are highest in difficult-to-fill positions such as math, science, and foreign languages, and in urban areas and secondary classrooms - places where we need our teachers to be especially motivated and engaged.

Resumen del Editor
In this stirring follow-up to the award-winning Fostering Resilient Learners, Kristin Van Marter Souers and Pete Hall take you to the next level of trauma-invested practice. To get there, they explain, educators need to build a "nest" - a positive learning environment shaped by three new Rs of education: relationship, responsibility, and regulation.
Drawing from their extensive experience working with schools, students, and families throughout the country, the authors:
- Explain how to create a culture of safety in which everyone feels valued, important, and capable of learning
- Describe the four areas of need - emotional, relational, physical, and control - that drive student behaviors and show how to meet these needs with interventions framed around the new three "R"s
- Illustrate trauma-invested practices in action through real scenarios that identify students' unmet needs, examine the situation from five stakeholder perspectives, and suggest interventions to support students and their families
- Offer opportunities to challenge your beliefs and develop deeper and different ways of thinking about your role in your students' lives.
Educators have a unique opportunity to influence students' learning, attitudes, and futures. This audiobook will invigorate your practice and equip you to empower those you serve, whatever their personal histories.
Relationship, Responsibility, and Regulation is skillfully narrated by Camille Mazant. All charts and graphics referenced in the audiobook are included in the supplementary PDF.
PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio.

We want our children to succeed, to be their best, and to do their best, but what if they are not on board? A few years ago, Ned Johnson and Bill Stixrud started noticing the same problem from different angles: even high-performing kids were coming to them acutely stressed and lacking any real motivation. Many complained that they had no real control over their lives.

Historia
For decades we've been told the key to prosperity is to look out for number one. But recent science shows that to achieve durable success, we need to be more than just achievers; we need to be compassionate achievers. New research in biology, neuroscience, and economics has found that compassion - recognizing a problem or caring about another's pain and making a commitment to help - not only improves others' lives; it can transform our own.

Phenomenally Inspiring!
I truly loved the knowledge and history on how trauma can affect various players in the field of education. The sceniors were detailed and easily relatable. This book is a must read for educators who truly wish to empower their students for academic excellence. I am a middle school counselor working with the department of defense in the UK. However, I have been a licensed psychotherapist for over 25 years and this book would also be great for new therapist, school counselors and social workers.
