Resumen del Editor

Are you or your teachers frustrated with carrots and sticks, detention rooms, and suspension-antiquated school discipline practices that simply do not work with the students entering our classrooms today? Our kids have complex needs, and we must empower and embrace them with restorative practices that not only change behaviors but transform students into productive citizens, accountable for their own actions.

In a book that should become your new blueprint for school discipline, teachers, presenters, and school leaders, Nathan Maynard and Brad Weinstein demonstrate how to eliminate punishment and build a culture of responsible students and independent learners. In Hacking School Discipline, you learn to:

  • Reduce repeated negative behaviors
  • Build student self-regulation and empathy
  • Enhance communication and collaboration
  • Identify the true cause of negative behaviors
  • Use restorative circles to reflect on behaviors and discuss impactful change

Great ideas to help foster positive behavior

I really liked the ideas that were suggested. As a music teacher, I am able to use a lot of this into my classroom. Thank you for sharing.

Hack the System Not the People

Hacking School Discipline with a restorative approach does require more time to demonstrate results, yet the investment in teaching and coaching the expected behaviors has huge dividends for the school community. The authors detail the blueprint for implementation of a restorative approach that has instant actionable steps. It’s a must read for educators. The only part I dislike is when the authors criticize current culture for emphasizing more value for entertainers and athletes over education. I think they are a little jealous and perhaps misinformed that students may feel more connected to entertainers and athletes than to educators. Otherwise, the authors have the credibility to release an amazing resource.

Giving restorative discipline a chance!

I like how this recognizes and outlines restorative discipline practices while also recognizing the hard truths. I definitely feel positive about practicing the “circle up” and reiterating expectations after listening to this. I especially like the MTSS section because we need to make sure that we are addressing the needs of students. Thank you!

Applicable

As a Special Education Teacher of 11 years in a classroom of ED students I found this book glto be easy to understand and I feel confident in trying some of the skills discussed. I also have some classes that do not have ED students and have already applied some of these things. Its working! Slow progress is better than no progress!

teacher and admin must read!

as a future administrator this book clearly provides a quality approach to behavior management. many of these ideas overlap with our pre-existing plan and could easily be implemented.

Overall good information for upper grades

We practice the concepts of restored of Justice in our school right now but I will say it is rather difficult to do with the K-2 band for the amount of time that it takes. I did glean some good nuggets to use in my classroom and I also was able to revise some of the practices I am currently using. I feel this book would be especially useful for 4th through 8th grade and possibly high school.
