Frustrating obstacles appear in every weight loss journey. Plateaus, overeating, slow weight loss, emotional eating, and weight gain are a few of the common roadblocks that can cause you to quit before you hit your goal weight. The good news is, all these obstacles can be overcome.

Each section in this audiobook will mentally prepare you for the challenges you are likely to face and will give you tips on how to overcome each one. It will help you to focus on the why behind losing weight and on the big picture so that you continue to make progress in a sustainable way.

Kayla Cox is a mom of three who has gone from being obese down to a normal BMI and has maintained her weight loss for years. In this audiobook, she shares the struggles she had at each phase of the weight loss journey, and how she’s dealt with each obstacle. She shares her failures, things she still struggles with, and the valuable lessons she’s learned in the process. She has a YouTube channel about intermittent fasting, weight loss, and walking that currently has over 40,000 subscribers. She also runs Slow and Steady Success Academy, an online academy that teaches people how to lose weight sustainably and keep it off for good.

I wasn’t familiar with the author before I bought the book, so this review is based entirely on the book’s contents and delivery.
I have read and listened to many weight loss books over the years, since, like the author, I have been gaining and losing over my life. I decided 2026 is my year of health, and that I was going to figure out why I could get within 10 lbs of my goal weight and then quit.
Listening to Kayla, I realized that I haven’t been “bad at diets,” I’ve been an absolute pit bull on my goals… major setbacks, resistance, addictions, self-belief issues… but I have NEVER given up. And because of that, I lost 40 lbs… maybe not exactly as much as I wanted to be “perfect,” but as Kayla said at one point, “if you wait for everything to be perfect to be happy, you’re going to be unhappy forever.” I realized I was just going to be happy with a range of weight, which includes the current weight. So I am not perfect, but no dieting or number will make me perfect. But I love my clothes and I love my abilities and that is ultimately what I’m here for.
Thanks, Kayla. I appreciate your sharing this.

Truly helpful and insightful - strongly recommend

Kayla hit some great points with this book, many things you don't often find from authors recollecting their weight loss journeys. I appreciated Kayla's active effort to keep this book more about the mental and social aspects of weight loss as opposed to a science-backed, step by step guide. Based on the reviews and sales I've seen online of this work, it really feels like the community that would make up the readers of this book would've been better served had this book been interwoven with the Laid Back Guide as authored by Kayla. By the end of the book, I learned a thing or two that I myself could reflect on and you likely will too.

A companion to Laid Back Guide
