Resumen del Editor

Fast After 50 is for every endurance athlete who wants to stay fast for years to come.

For runners, cyclists, triathletes, swimmers, and cross-country skiers, getting older doesn't have to mean getting slower. Drawing from the most current research on aging and sports performance, Joe Friel - America's leading endurance sports coach - shows how athletes can race strong and stay healthy well past age 50.

In his groundbreaking book Fast After 50, Friel offers a smart approach for athletes to ward off the effects of age. Friel shows athletes how to extend their racing careers for decades - and race to win.

Fast After 50 presents guidelines for high-intensity workouts, focused strength training, recovery, crosstraining, and nutrition for high performance:

  • How the body's response to training changes with age, how to adapt your training plan, and how to avoid overtraining
  • How to shed body fat and regain muscle density
  • How to create a progressive plan for training, rest, recovery, and competition
  • Workout guidelines, field tests, and intensity measurement

In Fast After 50, Joe Friel shows athletes that age is just a number - and race results are the only numbers that count.

With contributions from: Mark Allen, Gale Bernhardt, Amby Burfoot, Dr. Larry Creswell, John Howard, Dr. Tim Noakes, Ned Overend, Dr. John Post, Dr. Andrew Pruitt, and Lisa Rainsberger. This audiobook is skillfully narrated by Douglas James. All figures and tables referenced in the audiobook can be found in the supplementary PDF.

Intellectual understanding of aging and cycling written by the best in the industry

Although many parts are redundant with his other books, Joel Friel adds in a great understanding of aging in general and relating to cycling specifically

Complex, but done well

Too much fitness for most, but for those interested in top level fitness, and competitive drive, this is a very good place to start. His emphasis on what people could and should be, as opposed to what we have accepted as "normal aging" is important stuff.

Very Helpful!

I really enjoyed the book and was encouraged by all the science based info it includes. Lots of practical advice on how to train. I have put it to work and am seeing results.

Interesting, But Difficult to Reference

Full disclaimer, I do not and will not ever race. I am a middle of the pack cycling enthusiast. I got this audio-book for a couple of reasons - I am an aging cyclist and wanted to get Joe's take on training in my mid-50's. I also have the "Cyclists Training Bible" on the top of my bookshelf next to my trainer, so I was interested in hearing more from Joe Friel.

The concepts were interesting and I appreciated the amount of research that must have gone into to putting this book together. It is a little difficult to follow any reference type book on audio, so where it really falls apart is in the production. The Chapters are just labelled by number with no reference to what the chapter is about. That makes it pretty impossible to go back and re-listen to something without a lot of guesswork. They really could have made this much more usable by taking the time to come up with some indexing for the audio.

Bottom line is that I enjoyed it, but I will go buy a hard copy.

Great book

I agree that we are being limited with our research. For years I did research studies because as part of the research I would get free VO2 info. But since I have turned 50, I don't qualify for any studies, the study range is always 18-50.

Good advices to train

A really good book for us who are over 50 and still enjoy training in spite of limits of advancing age.

Easy to follow advices and hints to train, even without personal coach.

I strongly recommend this book.

Good info, jus needs 2 b updated to stay current.

Loved the wake up on information on clearing up some myths and long time widely known mistruths. But the book did contain a few of its own errors. For instance he has a chapter where he is going down the Keto path. This has been debunked. You can fuel with fat but your performance will suck because fat can't sustain like carbs can. With either carbs or fat the weight loss is equal over time because the outcome is actually due to the level of overall calorie restriction. Please update our revise as necessary.

Good running info, lousy nutrition advice

I totally disagree with the statement that animal protein is higher quality than plant protein. There are enough vegan ultramarathon runners and body builders to support evidence of quality plant protein without advising people to eat artery clogging animal fats and protein.
