First published in 1846, Fyodor Dostoyevsky's novella The Double is a classic doppelganger story and the second major work published by the author. It is the story of Yakov Petrovich Golyadkin, a government clerk who believes that a fellow clerk has taken over his identity and is determined to bring about his ruin. Considered the most Gogolesque of Dostoyevsky's works, the novella brilliantly depicts Golyadkin's descent into madness in a way that is hauntingly poetic. The Double illustrates Dostoyevsky's uncanny ability at capturing the complexity of human emotion.

Ancient Greeks and Romans had a term for the Double, referring to such an entity as a personal daemon or protector, a heavenly twin, who acts as an invisible guide during the lifetime of an individual. Recent Jungian psychologists refer to ''the double'' as ''a soul figure with all the erotic and spiritual significance'' attached to those inner figures whom Jung called anima (the inner feminine side of men) and animus (the inner masculine side of women). The double archetype, however, is not of the opposite, but of the same gender.

Our protagonist, Golyadkin senior, is persecuted by his double, Golyadkin junior, who resembles him closely in almost every detail. The latter abuses the former with mounting scorn and brutality as the tale proceeds toward its frightening denouement.
