Publisher's Summary

When a financial crisis in 1850s New York leaves three orphaned sisters nearly destitute, the oldest, Elise Neumann, knows she must take action. She's had experience as a seamstress, and the New York Children's Aid Society has established a special service: placing out seamstresses and trade girls. Even though Elise doesn't want to leave her sisters for a job in Illinois, she realizes this may be their last chance.

The son of one of New York City's wealthiest entrepreneurs, Thornton Quincy, faces a dilemma. His father is dying, and in order to decide which of his sons will inherit everything, he is requiring them to do two things in six months: build a sustainable town along the Illinois Central Railroad, and get married. Thornton is tired of standing in his twin brother's shadow and is determined to win his father's challenge. He doesn't plan on meeting a feisty young woman on his way west, though.

This book drove me crazy

I don't like to give negative reviews, but I'm so frustrated that I wasted a credit on this book that I can't help it. The narrator is annoying. I didn't listen to a sample before I bought the book since I love all things orphan train....big mistake. I made it 11 chapters into the book and there is a woman that goes west on a train through the children's aide society, but she's 19 and going for a job. The story is really a romance and an irritating one at that. I hate it when authors are always telling me how the character feels instead of showing me. And I hate the romance formula where someone is hiding how they really feel to simply move the story along. I didn't finish the book and don't care how it ends. I'm sorry for being so negative. I can say that it seems like the author did a good job of researching and found an interesting story I didn't know about (that the children's aide society helped place female workers out west) and the story line would have been good if the length of the book was cut in half and the characters were more fully developed than described.

The narrator is making my ears bleed!!!

I've only made it to chapter FOUR! This woman should not be a narrator, for anything!! She sounds like a monotoned news reporter. Every sentence follows the same pitch pattern and it's driving me CRAZY!! There is no feeling in her reading. It's sad because the book actually seems interesting and I was looking forward to listening to the series... but I don't know if I can make it through the rest of this book listening to her voice, let alone the other two. Ignore my rating on the story because that seems pretty good. I'm only here to comment on this terrible narrator. Completely horrid!

Great story - not so great narrator

I anxiously picked up this audible book and am looking forward to the other 3 books in the trilogy. However, I will NOT listen to a book narrated by this narrator again. I will get the other 2 in print form. Very dissatisfied.

Wonderful

This story keeps you riveted to your seat! I wasn’t ready for the story to end! Very well written!

Excellent story

One star off for the narration which would have been excellent except for one character. The voice used for that one made me cringe every time he spoke and that was often. It didn't ruin the book, but was terrible. Other than that it was a great book and I'd love to hear a sequel.

Loved it

I really enjoyed this book. There was more to the story then two people falling in love.

Nice interlude between more demanding online courses.

Pleasant, kept my interest. The narrator gave a credible presentation. I would read other books by this author.

Educational, interesting and most enjoyable

I thoroughly enjoyed this book about the clash of classes and different life goals and dreams of both. I liked both of the main characters immediately and enjoyed see them develop over the course of the book. I lovely romance with some unexpected drama at the end.
