After years of schooling, Beth Thatcher has graduated and is determined to become a teacher. But when she's assigned the position no one else wants - in the tiny mining town of Coal Valley, located in the rugged foothills of western Canada - she worries she doesn't have the courage to accept. Inspired by the diary of her aunt Elizabeth, who went west to teach school several years earlier, as well as her father's encouragement, Beth eventually decides to put her trust in God and leave behind all she's ever known. But the conditions in Coal Valley are even worse than she'd feared. A recent mining accident has left the town grieving and at the mercy of the mining company. The children have very little prior education, and many of the locals don't even speak English. In addition, Beth's heart is torn between two young men - both Mounties, one a lifelong friend and the other a kind, quiet man who comes to her aid more than once. Despite the unexpected challenges, Beth is determined to make a difference in the rustic frontier town. But when her sister visits from the East, reminding her of all the luxuries she's had to give up, will Beth decide to return to her privileged life as soon as the school year is over?

At first I found it to go slow but when Beth arrived to the town she was going to make a great difference it captivated my heart of faith and to know that God is in control of everything and if we allowed ourselves he can use us to help others for his glory and not ours
Thank you for a beautiful story

Surprisingly, this was the best way to read, since I didn't have time to just 'sit' and flip pages of a book.

I love this book, and followed the story line with When Calls the Heart on TV. I enjoyed the differences in this book, and the additional detail.

Great Story

The book was good. I guess it bugged me her always thinking what would papa think mother or Julie. I haven't decided if I want to read the second book. The book is good just not captivating.

Pretty good

Definitely not a romance. I guess a story of self discovery? It was a bit boring. Like the author knew this was going to be an introduction to a series and didn’t really make it a standalone story. I plan on reading the second book. I liked the characters. The narrator did a good job.

Uneventful

I really enjoyed this book. I started watching the TV series on Netflix and thought I would read the book while I wait for the next season to become available. The book is a little different than the TV series but just as good!!

True enjoyment

I loved the narrator. The characters are from when calls the heart tv show. It was a good story. I’ll be moving on to the next in this series.

So enjoyable!

Sometimes as a teacher, you get depleted emotionally, even mentally and physically, and only other teachers really understand what it's like. We love and care for our students. We work hard to be the teacher our students need, while trying to also fulfill state and school mandates. However, we're often looked down upon and taken for granted by those that don't realize how difficult this job really is. It's those times, when my spirit is low and I need inspiration to continue on in this seemingly impossible job I have chosen, that I reach for this book. It reminds me that through God, and with hard work, all things are possible. It also reminds me that the relationships we build with our students is so much more important than the academics we teach. Thank you Jeanette Oke for this lovely story!
