Publisher's summary

Rian Thompson thought she joined the gym to get healthy. Little did she know she was about to add 190 pounds of swoonworthy abdominal muscles and arrogance to her life.

Every day in Rians's life follows a predictable pattern, and she wouldn't have it any other way. She's got a nice job, a nice place to live, and a nice family - even if they are a little wedding-zilla-ish at the moment.

She doesn't need anything spectacular to be happy. She just needs to get healthy - mentally, physically...and maybe spiritually if that happens. But she'll settle for two out of three until her sister finally gets hitched.

Carlos Davies thought his life was perfect. Little did he know it was about to be turned upside down by a woman who is not his type.

In Carlos' mind, his life is damn near perfect. He's got a great job, a great place to live, and a great stash of pickup lines that always work. It has occurred to him that maybe no one actually takes him all that seriously. But with these bulging biceps and thick, dark hair, does that even matter since he's never sleeping alone?

Welcome to Weight Expectations, where great - and unexpected - things happen.

Contains mature themes.

Weird choice for male narrator

I actually liked the story quite a bit, but it was hard to get past the male narrator’s voice. It was annoying, but bearable at first, since towards the beginning of the book Carlos was a total tool. When the Carlos’ words became more heartfelt and genuine though, the narrator sounded anything but. I couldn’t help rolling my eyes because the narrator sounded like such a douche canoe. It made me kind of sad that I didn’t read the book instead. Now if I read it, I probably won’t be able to hear Carlos with any other voice in my head.

Awful male narrator

I am not one to give up on a book....but this male narrator is THE WORST I've ever heard. I looked up other books he's done and people seem to feel the same. Audible, please quit using Alex Kydd: he ruins it!!!

Awful Narration

I could not even get into this book due to the awful narration. Alex Kydd made Carlos sound like he didn’t have two brain cells to rub together. While Stephanie Rose made everything sound too breathy or whinny. Not everything needs to be over exaggerated. I typically love these books but this was not good

What the heck happened?

Ammendment: I am upgrading my review now that I finished. It 2/3 of the book, but Carlos became more likeable and the story had a good message...without being preachy. Unfortunately, I am still not a fan of the male narrator.

First, I am a huge Smartypants Romance Universe fan, get ready though because here comes the but...What the heck happened here?!?!? While I really enjoyed the female leads story and narrator, I cannot even remotely say the same about the lead male character OR narrator. There has never been a character I was so disgusted by in any of the Smartypants Romance books as I was by Carlos and the narrator made it much worse. So much so, that I stopped mid book to write this review. It is rare, even if it is bad, that I don't finish a book and I'm not going to make an exception here...but I am VERY tempted. It makes me sad.

i recommend reading the series

im a huge penny reid fan, i recommend reading the knitting in the city books first to understand more of these spin off smartypants romance series (i like the Winston brothers series even more). the book was good overall, but i felt it lacked something. like characters weren't fully developed. but i liked the main characters and the supporting ones fine. narration,,,I'm sorry i just didn't like the male lead. i got used to it and finished, but not my favorite. he sounded like a wanna be surfer.

Great Story

I thoroughly enjoyed the story during the female narration. I had a hard time getting past the fact the male narrator sounded like a frat guy jerk. If you can power through that it's a great book!!

Cute Story

I guess I’m too used to read erotica. The story was cute, but I would have loved to see how Carlos handled Rian behind closed doors. Otherwise, it was a sweet romantic story. The narration wasn’t my favorite, but it grew on me. The story meant more.

Re-record and make it aHit!!

The story itself is quite good. It cutoffs have used more sex, too be more realistic. The female narrator was okay, she went "shatner" a few too many times, but not enough to complain about. Overall her performs was witty and entertaining. The male narrator was horrific initially and just really bad after 50% of the book passed. The character as written was hard enough to like, combining it with this narrator is a mistake. Please do yourself a favor and re-record this with a new male narrator and you'd get an overwhelming positive response and an increase in sales.

Male Narrator

The female narrator was great and her personality came through, but the male narrator sounded like he was an 80’s valley boy with no brains. Couldn’t get past the second chapter.

Awful male narrator!

I could not listen past the introduction of the male narrator. It was really hard on my ears. Such a shame as it began with much humour.

Male narrator off putting

Male narrator in this book sounds creepy, it ruins the story - makes it hard to focus on the story

Really enjoyed

Yes the male voice actor is a little slow, but he can really throw his voice well and u enjoyed both voice actors.
The storyline is well thought out and really has sarcastic humour which I loved.

Enjoyable

I enjoyed that and loved the inclusion of older characters from Penny Reids books. I did struggle a little with the male narrator but it had a great story line that kept me going till the end.

Glad I was wrong about this one

I was a little concerned given the title of the book but thankfully that is the name of the gym where the characters meet rather than a fat phobic comment. I love the universe this is set in, basically Penny Reid is incredible, so gave it a go. The nightmare that is the US work provided healthcare forces Rian to join a gym to lose weight (side note weight has nothing to do with health), she also has pressure from family to fit the aesthetic of her skinny sisters wedding. Carlos is a regular and has issues with trying to feel big/attractive enough. Carlos only has one night stands with pretty women without ambition and with a certain gym bunny aesthetic. He becomes friends with Rian which leads to enemies to him giving her a job to lovers. The ‘he changes for her’ story isn’t my favourite but it is done relatively well here. I’ll try others to see what the author can do as she gets more comfortable with the world.

worst male narration ever

If the male narration was included in the sample, I would not have purchased this book. Not quite sure why Alex Kydd chose to use a smarmy, Rocky accent but the second I heard it I wanted to scrape it out of my ears. Maybe he used that accent because the male character was an awful human being. Sorry but I returned this one unfinished.
