Publisher's summary

Two siblings trapped in a world of abuse. One woman determined to free them.

Evie and Elliot are scrawny, filthy, and wide-eyed with fear when they turn up on foster carer Maggie Hartley's doorstep. Aged just two and three years old, this brother and sister have hardly set foot outside their own home. They have been prisoners, locked in a terrifying world of abuse, violence, and neglect.

Maggie soon realizes that Evie and Elliot are lacking the basic life skills we all take for granted. The outside world terrifies them; the sound of the doorbell sends them into a panic that takes hours to abate. Gradually unlocking the truth of their heart-breaking upbringing, Maggie tells their shocking true story.

From emotionally scarred and damaged little children, we see how - with warmth and dedication - Maggie transforms their lives. As this moving story unfolds, we share Maggie's joy when these children finally smile again, when they realize they do have a future after all.

MAGGIE IS AN ANGEL

Maggie has a gift that is soooo touching. I wish all children, who by some misfortune, must go into foster care had a Maggie.

Good All Around Experience

This story has all the tact and realism of the series. The writing style does not grow tiresome as with some authors. The personalities and experiences of the children make each story fresh. As a reader from the US I find the British slang charming and ‘brilliant’.

Best Memoir I've ever read!

It's so refreshing to read something both realistic and positive about foster care. Interesting to hear the differences in the American and British systems as well as the overwhelming similarities. The author is a brilliant "Foster carer" as she calls it, as well as writer. I love that she was able to capture the nuances of the lasting effects of neglect, the overwhelming tragedy of a child who is void of hope, and the pure joy of family done right, in all it's forms. I feel I've meet each of these characters in my own experience with the system. Respectful and humorous throughout. Well done! Great read!

Wonderful, narrator very good

The story was so wonderful. She reminds me of my sister who taught me how to give choices, be gentle and calmly praising. I was so proud of how and how much she loved these children.

The narrator handled the whole book really well. I felt she voiced all ages and types of people just as they should be.

Listening to a fellow foster care parent

As a “fosterer” as referred, I enjoyed reading about others experiences with fostering. As well as learning."
