Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. I decided that Orion Lake needed to die after the second time he saved my life. Everyone loves Orion Lake. Everyone else, that is. Far as I’m concerned, he can keep his flashy combat magic to himself. I’m not joining his pack of adoring fans. I don’t need help surviving the Scholomance, even if they do. Forget the hordes of monsters and cursed artifacts; I’m probably the most dangerous thing in the place. Just give me a chance and I’ll level mountains and kill untold millions, making myself the dark queen of the world.

Kate Harker and August Flynn are the heirs to a divided city - a city where the violence has begun to breed actual monsters. All Kate wants is to be as ruthless as her father, who lets the monsters roam free and makes the humans pay for his protection. All August wants is to be human, as good-hearted as his own father, to play a bigger role in protecting the innocent - but he's one of the monsters. One who can steal a soul with a simple strain of music.

It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of dos and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job - and don't ever associate with loose women. The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail.

Arrested on accusations of witchcraft and treason, Chant finds himself trapped in a cold, filthy jail cell in a foreign land. With only his advocate, the unhelpful and uninterested Consanza, he quickly finds himself cast as a bargaining chip in a brewing battle between the five rulers of this small, backwards, and petty nation. A bit disappointed
this was my first time reading the fifth book in the queens theif novels. I am beginning to wonder if the story will ever get centered on Gen again. We got the first two books with him as the main character, one as a side character, and two as a backround character. And sadly the latest MC was the not the most compelling or interesting character to follow. And the cadance or forms used to tell the history or stories by the MC were a pain to listen to. If I had a physical copy I'd probably have thought it was a typo or misprint. Honestly it wasn't until the last four chapters or so before I felt the story was finally becoming interesting. GL on the next one

A favorite
A book by my favorite author. I waited 7 years for it and the wait was rewarded. Just read it, if you haven't read the books that come before it first; if it had been a while, at the very least reread books 2&3. I preferred reading this book to listening. I didn't love the narration; it is good, but not great. I did think it better than the narration of the third book by the same narrator (I think). Maybe my not loving the narration (of book 3) was just a case of having read it so many times and the narration being different than how it is in my head.
