Publisher's Summary

Young Jody lives with his ma and pa on a farm in backwoods Florida. Life is hard there: cutting wood, planting fields, hauling water from a distant sinkhole. It is dangerous: wolves and bears roam the night. It’s also lonely for a young boy. One spring day, Jody’s pa kills a deer for meat. When Jody sees her spotted fawn in the brush, he convinces his father they should bring the fawn home. Thus begins a year when deer and boy are never far from each other. But the day will come when Jody must make a terrible choice between his beloved pet and his family’s survival.

The Yearling, published 50 years ago, is an enduring classic which won the Pulitzer Prize. As it follows Jody from childhood to the first steps of adulthood, it has touched the hearts of readers of all ages. Now, with Tom Stechschulte’s warm narration, this moving story will delight an even wider audience.

Gorgeous

Wonderful book, good story, some predictable elements, but the "twist" was unexpected. I expected a whole different reason for the "big decision." This was better. Warm, authentic and suitable for all ages, cultures and interests. Narrator very good. Recommended -- in fact, should be required reading for students of the human community. Tolerance, humor, survival, family, fathers and sons.... just great.

The first book ever to make me cry!

A heartwarming and heart-wrenching story of a boy's growing up with his faithful friend beside him. This is a story I will read many times over and share with my children when they get a little older. the narrator was superb and really brought the story to life. I listen to a lot of audio books and I must say this is one of the best I've ever heard! Take the time to listen, I don't think you will be sorry.

Best and most touching coming-of-age story ever

The characterization, the rural simplicity, simple narrative arc, the friendship with Fodder-Wing, the closeness of the family, the descriptions of the landscape and its wildlife--it's like Huckleberry Finn, Little House on the Prairie, and the parable of the prodigal son all rolled into one.

The Yearling - mesmerizing

One of my favorite stories of all time. Captivating and engaging, Jodie, Flag, and Penny are characters that come to life in this well written and totally engrossing story about loneliness, love, and loss.

National Treasure

This book is a national treasure. I’d put it up against Huck Finn any day. Tolstoy would have wept to read it — and wished he’d created a character as lovely and whole as Penny Baxter.

One of the best!

This is a wonderful coming of age tale. A true classic. This is also one of the most beautifully performed audio books I have ever listened to, and I listen to dozens each year. As a literature teacher I played several portions for my students and they sat spellbound. How could they not? Again, truly a remarkable audio book.

I really enjoyed this story. it took a while to get through the southern poor folk vocabulary. the audio version was very well read and helped.
