Publisher's summary

Now a New York Times best seller!

From the author of Truths I Never Told You, Before I Let You Go, and the upcoming The Warsaw Orphan, Kelly Rimmer’s powerful WWII novel follows a woman’s urgent search for answers to a family mystery that uncovers truths about herself that she never expected.

"Kelly Rimmer has outdone herself. I thought that Before I Let You Go was one of the best novels I had ever read.... If you only have time to read one book this year The Things We Cannot Say should be that book. Keep tissues handy." (Fresh Fiction)

"Fans of The Nightingale and Lilac Girls will adore The Things We Cannot Say." (Pam Jenoff, New York Times best-selling author)

In 1942, Europe remains in the relentless grip of war. Just beyond the tents of the Russian refugee camp she calls home, a young woman speaks her wedding vows. It’s a decision that will alter her destiny...and it’s a lie that will remain buried until the next century.

Since she was nine years old, Alina Dziak knew she would marry her best friend, Tomasz. Now 15 and engaged, Alina is unconcerned by reports of Nazi soldiers at the Polish border, believing her neighbors that they pose no real threat, and dreams instead of the day Tomasz returns from college in Warsaw so they can be married. But little by little, injustice by brutal injustice, the Nazi occupation takes hold, and Alina’s tiny rural village, its families, are divided by fear and hate. Then, as the fabric of their lives is slowly picked apart, Tomasz disappears. Where Alina used to measure time between visits from her beloved, now, she measures the spaces between hope and despair, waiting for word from Tomasz and avoiding the attentions of the soldiers who patrol her parents’ farm. But for now, even deafening silence is preferable to grief.

Slipping between Nazi-occupied Poland and the frenetic pace of modern life, Kelly Rimmer creates an emotional and finely wrought narrative. The Things We Cannot Say is an unshakable reminder of the devastation when truth is silenced...and how it can take a lifetime to find our voice before we learn to trust it.

Don't miss Kelly Rimmer's new and unforgettable novel, The Warsaw Orphan.

Interesting book

I love the story. The only problem is they use the word incredulously too often in the audio.

Made My Heart Hurt!

Amazing story of how love carries on during a time of terror and horror. The selflessness of so many people so help to save their loved ones or even strangers. Lots of twists and turns. Excellent ending. Liked the modern day flashbacks to the time of the Reich. Highly recommend.

Unbelievable sacrifices for love!

I love WWII love stories! Just can’t get enough of them. This one was different from the others I’ve read as it focused almost solely on relationships rather than the atrocities committed. It is a good story with believable characters although I had issues with some of the narration, especially Thomas’ voice. I didn’t care much for the narrators portrayal of any of the men’s voices actually & felt like I needed to speed up the tape every time a man was speaking. It was annoying. Other than that, I enjoyed the story very much. I hope this is helpful.

Fabulous book.

I was hesitant to buy this book in the beginning however after reading the reviews I was too curious not to.
Once I began listening, I couldn’t put it down. It will draw you into their world as though you were there. A time and place of horrific evil, yet through it all weaves a beautiful story of love, loss, hope and sacrifice. This is the type of book that I will listen to more than once. I fell in love with the family and will want to go back in time and join them again.

Terrific Story

The story of both Alice and her grandmother were heartwarming and intriguing. Helped me realize that my problems are so insignificant compared with what these two women endured. I highly recommend this book and am ordering more from this author.

Beautiful.

What an incredibly moving story. I absolutely loved it. It was so sad but so good. I love the back and forth between what was, what is and then as it came to in end. Poetic ❤️ thank you for your incredible talent to tell such stories and to the performers I love hearing your voices on every book I listen to ❤️

Interesting & intriguing historical novel

I wasn’t sure I’d like the book as it began and was somewhat confused... however, that was part of the plot & technique... the period of Polish history was chaotic and sad. I was intrigued and sad to read more deeply about these events. A good read that was hard to put down!
